Hornet Mercy

Beware the intrusive buzzing
that relays one trapped hornet's distress.
Each futile flight into a
glass masked, sunlit window
brings disappointment's glimpse
at a moment's lost success.

Dare I care enough to capture and release him?
Hear fear's caution in my unsuspecting ear?
His will to stab my veins
to release his shield of pain,
may surge regret
to melt down wet,
unforgiveable tears.

For isn't a hornet a passionate, pervasive bother,
Killing others, the bumblers, sippers, and their queens ?
Their death echoes implore, "Please kill him,"
for he steals lives for the sake of hornet dreams.
He is no friend to a merciful, nurturing nature,
preying daily upon those who desire to serve,
he flies freely, one lost and lonely predator
into a kind world,
giving nothing to deserve.

But are not all men cruel and hostile hornets
wondering whether to sting
or fly with souls freely driven?
For the hornet mercy we choose to liberally give
is the hornet mercy we have liberally been given.
