DfbrL8r

DfbrL8r Based in Chicago, Defibrillator Gallery (DFBRL8R) is an international roving platform dedicated to Performance Art.
(101)

Itinerant since 2020, DFBRL8R presents projects whenever and wherever opportunities arise. Committed to presenting a vast range of styles and forms of time-based art, DEFIBRILLATOR is dedicated to fostering local talent while invigorating Chicago by bringing to the city artists of exceptional calibre from around the world. Contextualizing performance within visual art, we embrace those who look to

the body, objects, space, and time for inspiration, research, and practice. Providing opportunities for established and emerging artists alike, DEFIBRILLATOR is a platform for underrepresented voices and time-based work that does not sit comfortably within pre-established genres or disciplines. Dynamic programming, decidedly fearless and unique, aims to provoke thought and stimulate discourse surrounding performance art. Our goal is to foster and contribute to a global dialog surrounding conceptual, ephemeral, or enigmatic forms of expression.

title: experiments in free-drumming II. This work is a motion-capture extended reality performance that expands the sonic capabilities of marching-style drums and envisions a post-human version of drumline. The audience will witness a transformation of traditional drum sounds and rhythms, and interact with virtual artifacts via augmented reality. The virtual extension of the performance explores a post-human environment, delving into what a drumline might resemble once its regimented and militaristic roots are stripped away using familiar yet otherworldly imagery and artifacts.

Sal Moreno is a creative technologist and artist based in Chicago who engages with creative computation, sound, performance, and new media. Sal experiments with free-drumming and emerging technology to dismantle the regimented traditions of marching band and its origins in Western military and music ideologies. His fluency with game engines and motion capture allows him to develop animations, visual effects, particle systems, and generative sounds to re-envision the representation of the human body in virtual spaces. He has shown work at Ars Electronica, EXPO Chicago, Mana Contemporary, and virtual platforms. Sal received the 2021 Excellency in New Media Award by the New Media Caucus. He is an educator at UIC Chicago, Northeastern Illinois, and UC Irvine.

title: DEAD LETTERS. This work is an attempt and a failure to let go of the past. Forgetting is a gift. Gravity is unfaithful. Cleaning is great: it's all about playing in the dirt. Thanks to The Outfield, Paul Escriva, and Red Onion Arts Collective.

Carole McCurdy is a Chicago-based artist whose movement-based work addresses grief and anxiety, duty and resistance, and the absurd mysteries of embodiment. She has performed at spaces including the Chicago Cultural Center, Epiphany Dance, Links Hall, Hamlin Park, High Concept Laboratories, Defibrillator Gallery, and Movement Research [NY]. She received a 2016 Lab Artist award from the Chicago Dancemakers Forum and was a Fall 2016 Sponsored Artist at High Concept Laboratories, Chicago. She created and directed an ensemble piece, WAVER, with support from CDF, HCL, and 3Arts Chicago, and more recently created Just Passing Through [2021–22], a video, installation, and performance shown at Roman Susan gallery.

title: Deep Moon, Pluto | This is a performance about the body entangled with technology; about vulnerable male sexuality, voyeurism, openness, and transformation through exposure and subordination. Original music by Falk, special thanks to video artist Zbigniew Bzymek.

bio: is a visiting artist from Warsaw with support of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. Falk [b. 1984, Poland] is an intermedia artist and performer who creates and interprets “bodytales” - a term the artist uses for performative actions realized in various formats combining text along with other interests including ecofeminist thought, mythology, and rituals. Falk uses provocative gesture, juxtaposing a paradigm of care with the reality of a technocratic dystopia to create sculptural objects, installations, and music. Falk has been featured in numerous festivals and exhibitions including Grace Exhibition Space, NYC; Baryshnikov Arts Center, NYC; WeHo Prose Arts, LA; The Watermill Center, Long Island; Art in Nature Festival, Austria; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; National Museum in Krakow; Grey Space Gallery, The Hague; Performance Crossings Festival, Prague; Carbonarium Festival, Kiev; F.a.i.t. Gallery, Krakow; Epipiderme Festival, Lisbon; Espacio OFF Limits, Madrid; Galeria CMTV, Barcelona; Interactions Festival, Poland; Performance Platform Lublin Festival, Poland; and others across Europe and Americas..

Hey! Come improvise with us tonight for one hour from 6-7PM at BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN in honor of the SPRING EQUINOX. Participate in our group improvisation! No need to prepare anything [maybe best that you don’t!] - just come and respond to the space, the other participants, and objects. Everyone performs simultaneously, composing images as a group in a wide open space with the dormant fountain and skyscrapers behind.

BRING OBJECTS to experiment with and share. Bright objects are great, also things that activate in the wind. It’s supposed to be windy today! DRESS FOR THE WEATHER! Gloves would be smart. There are no restrooms on site - be sure to plan accordingly.

We put a lot of information on our website - check it out: https://dfbrl8r.org/exhibit/same-but-different

Embracing spontaneity and collaboration, you will have boundless opportunities to explore the body in relationship to time, space, and objects through intentional crossovers and random interactions with other participants.

See you there!
