Our newest resident artists, Martha Wade (Martha A. Wade) and Reisha Williams (Reisha), have known each other since 2011. A friendship built on a natural artistic bond that started with, of all things, a fan. Their story reminds us of the value of creative communities and the collaboration that they breed.

Zhou B and Chicago art community at BUTTER Fine Art Fair in Indianapolis! Special shout out to resident artist and curator Blake D. Lenoir who exhibited with Butter for the 3rd time this year. The fair also featured works from Barrett Keithley, Anthony Bartley, Connect Gallery, Eric January, and Norman Teague Design Studios who have all exhibited work at Zhou B this year.

“Everything eventually finds its way back to the source of it all.” Rooted Frequency by Blake D. Lenoir comments on the relationship of love and nature today.

Blake Lenoir is a contemporary surrealist painter whose work explores emotional intelligence, cultural memory, and Black identity. This piece is a part of the “The Threads of Us”, a group exhibition curated by Blake on view through September 13th at Zhou B Art Center.

Within “The Threads Of Us” is the work of Chicago artist Barrett Keithley whose work draws from Afrofuturism, street art, and ancestral memory. Barrett’s art is rooted in a mission of service: to show people their beauty, and in doing so, awaken their brilliance.

Artist Jamele Wright Sr. (Jamele Wright) creates paintings that are as much constructed as they are painted. Each work begins long before the brush touches the surface. He sews, dyes, stains, and builds his canvases by hand, creating richly layered compositions where every material plays a role in the story.

Jamele considers how each piece will resonate emotionally, invite reflection, and connect with the viewer beyond what is seen.

“What the Eye Beholds” expands our perception of what art can be. Moving beyond traditional canvas, the featured artists transform unexpected materials into powerful works rich with texture, depth, and meaning.

Through fabric, metal, found objects, and layered surfaces, they invite viewers to experience stories that are not only seen, but felt.
