Most of weaver Rachel Hefferan's (@michiganbean) microbiological works are made on the TC2, a digital jacquard loom, where every pixel is mapped digitally to a thread allowing the artist immense control over her design. [Firma Calva], however, is Hefferan’s first substantial piece woven on a floor loom in over two years of working on the TC2. It was woven on the same warp as two of her other works using a cartoon that was created digitally and then printed, rather than hand drawn. Though it still aligns with the whole of her oeuvre, Hefferan considers this to be her “middle finger” to jacquard weaving, focusing more on the labor-intensive craft of handweaving on the floor loom. Watching a time-lapse of her process, the painstaking effort and intense care that went into [Firma Calva] is breathtaking. Each brightly colored thread is alive, both standing on its own as well as creating a cohesive and immersive whole. Paper was first made in Asia about two thousand years ago, and the art of papermaking evolved gradually. More than a thousand years passed before it was introduced into Europe during the thirteenth century. Traditional papermaking required a long and often expensive apprenticeship. Knowledge of the craft was limited to the select workers who were frequently sworn to secrecy because no craftsman wished to share knowledge with competitors. This Saturday, October 23rd, artist Molly Blumberg will share her secrets of the craft at our latest [salonlb.] workshop, Papermaking + Mimosas.
