ARTIST FEATURE: LISA JEAN ALLSWEDE

The Wandering Hibiscus Statement

“The Wandering Hibiscus” is my celebration of womanhood. This deeply personal body of artwork stitches together crystalized remembrances of childhood, motherhood, moving, sexuality, aging, and embracing imperfection — panels of vignettes commemorating the memories of an aging woman.

Each of these vignettes is composed of a kaleidoscope of threads, sequins, and zippers all tangled together to form a Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. I love the hibiscus as I am drawn firstly to it’s alluring sensuality. Its ruby, fleshy goodness reminds me to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. In a broader context, the hibiscus symbolizes femininity, warmth, love, and passion. The mythology of the flower helps women reclaim their sexuality, vitality, and invincibility in the face of degrading depictions of women in media. I see myself within these descriptors and have learned to use the flower as a looking glass into myself.

To honor our serendipitous relationship, I began photographing the hibiscus in June 2012 and soon after began sewing on those photographs. From photographs to twisted threads, each vignette is a journey of revelations. I utilized jacked-up french knots, misguided sashiko stitches, and jumbled layers of machine stitching to help mend my wounds from womanhood.

What began as an unexpected attraction to a flower transformed into a self-portrait of sorts; a celebration of a woman in her 50s.

"An Exploration of Self” Garment Series by Iyomi Ho Ken Iyomi

In "An Exploration of Self," I take the viewer through the experience of “me-” the feelings, thoughts, and various emotions that go through my mind. Each piece brings you into an aspect of myself, layered with bodysuits that change color over time, while the black garments layered on the surface illustrate the idea of that particular look. The roundness recurring throughout the collection illustrates a barrier that keeps others at bay. Over the course of the collection, the silhouettes draw the audience closer, each look slowly diminishing the barrier, evolving into a form that becomes almost one with the body and spills into itself. In turn, the colors guiding the audience through each piece become absorbed into the skin. This evolution is an indicator of change, acceptance and openness to the woman I have been, currently am, and will be.

ARTIST FEATURE: BARBARA KENDRICK

"The Fleshed Out project addresses issues about the representation of aging women and self-portraiture. The series began seven years ago with two questions: if I made self-portraits at the age of 83, what would they look like? What would you not want to see? As a culture, we have an aversion to looking at the wrinkled truths of aging. This current work is a new chapter in a career which has confronted taboos of society and the body.

I find my wrinkled skin to be both fascinating and repulsive, so I flaunt it, substituting photos of my wrinkled flesh for smooth marble drapery on images of portrait busts and statues. In place of the statue’s face, I paste an image of myself. Photos of my wrinkled neck, hands and arms become stuff to work with, a material I manipulate in Photoshop, to use as drapery. My sagging, crepey skin mocks the perfection of marble, a bold, vulnerable, often humorous confrontation with the evidence of aging." - Barbara F. Kendrick

Check out Barbara's work during the closing reception of "Feminist to the Core" this Friday, September 22nd from 6PM - 10PM.

ARTIST FEATURE: PATTY CARROLL

Patty Carroll has been known for her use of highly intense, saturated color photographs since the 1970s. Her most recent project, “Anonymous Women,” consists of a 3-part series of studio installations made for the camera, addressing women and their complicated relationships with domesticity. By camouflaging the figure in drapery and/or domestic objects, Carroll creates a dark and humorous game of hide-and-seek between her viewers and the Anonymous Woman.

"My work is about entangling women and home, leading to the phrase “housewife.” All of the narrative still-life photographs are imagined interior spaces of rooms filled with décor and objects, engulfing a lone figure of a woman, camouflaged, often with only bits of her visible. She is both a victim of her obsessions, activities, and circumstances as well as the invisible creator of such; both satisfying and problematic, pathetic and humorous. I create imaginary, humorous worlds in the studio (on a full size “stage” set) that critique and satirize claustrophobic expectations of domestic perfection, an unending but frustrating endeavor. My photographs are metaphors for the interior lives of women; how we substitute everyday objects and artifice and turn them into obsessions. As we were all confined to our homes during the pandemic, the meaning and overwhelming experience of being “at home,” although often humorous sadly took on more universal meaning; an experience that was dreadful, yet prompted people to take stock of what home is, what is means, what makes a home, and how home is an extension of individual identity. " - Patty Carroll

Introducing Sally Ko

Sally Ko was born in Seoul, Korea in 1971. She immigrated to the United States with her family when she was two years old. She grew up in the city and north suburbs of Chicago and now lives in Chicago. Sally attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art.

Sally works in a variety of styles and media but is especially known for her style of pouring and manipulating paint to create the loose, yet controlled sensation of her paintings. The organic patterns and appearance of this variety of her paintings reflect not only the actual theme or content of the particular painting in which they appear but also the mental process that gives life to the work

Sally’s work is widely appreciated and can be found in the personal collections of a variety of clients that includes everyone from teachers to producers, executives to restaurateurs, and several prominent national and international names. Her works have been featured in various magazines and have been displayed in organized shows, art fairs, corporate spaces, hotels, fashionable restaurants, galleries, and international museums.

Stop by the gallery to view the works or browse the collection on the shop now! Link in bio.
