Here’s some of my favorite pieces from the Minnesota State Fair Crop Art Competition. There were far more than 20 impressive pieces there, I just couldn’t fit them in this post.

Very grateful to have brought home a ribbon in this sea of talented crop sculptors. It really showed the passion being expressed through art from this beautiful state. I am glad to have found this meditative art form, and until you try it yourself it may be hard to appreciate how intricate these pieces are (and how much patience it takes to finish one).

“P4ul Goes to the Fair”

The Minnesota State Fair is here! So it’s time for me to share my first ever attempt at a nearly 60 year tradition of Seed Art. I was in awe last year when i found myself in a room filled floor to ceiling with this incredibly intricate art form, so naturally I looked at Maria and I said “we’re doing this!” Fast forward one year later and we are sitting at our dinner table painstakingly placing each seed on our respective designs…for weeks!

The irony of my design is that I created my “P4ul” character in Miami when challenged by El Fresco Miami to create a character design for “Outta Character II”. From there, a flannel wearing alien lumberjack channeling the spirit of Paul Bunyan (a Minnesota legend) was born. Needless to say I was extremely honored to win a ribbon for the seed art sculpture of my original character inspired by the essence of Minnesota on my first year in this competition.

If you have a chance to see this wildly unique and regionally specific art form (and are willing to brave the line) I assure you that you’ll leave feeling inspired. So many creative concepts and so much of that Minnesota grit that makes the state so beautiful. More Seed Art footage to come!

Big ups to El Fresco for helping encourage P4ul to step out of the UFO and show his face. Who knew he would eventually end up at the biggest state fair in the country.

Today the art world got a whole lot quieter and a hell of a lot less vibrant. We lost a pioneer in color, form and complete environmental immersion. Yayoi Kusama made a splash in the world through her hallucination inspired immersive experiences. She learned as a child that art could help calm the impact of mental illness and was gracious enough to share this with all of us.

She had the power to change your perception and block out the stresses of society, even if just for a minute…what a beautiful minute that is. Her first solo exhibition was in 1952 and since then she continued to bless us with her unique vision through sculpture, paint and design until her last day. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a number of rooms and have been able to feel the power of her installations.

What a beautiful human with a beautiful mind. A true inspiration to us all, if you ever took the time to take it in.

Yayoi…thank you for showing us the power of calmness in chaos, the strength of the human psyche and the diversity of form.
