Is one of your new year's goals to read more? 📖

Our Czech’em Out Book Club is back in 2024 kicking off with a discussion on January's pick, "Vera’s Story" on January 15 at 3 p.m. CST. It is the powerful tale of a Czech family caught up in the storm of history, from the aftermath of World War I through the fall of the Berlin Wall. Seventy-five years later, their wounds have healed, but the scars that remain compel the telling of this story of hope, courage, and perseverance.

Learn how you can join in-person or via Zoom and to order your copy at https://ncsml.org/event/veras-story-book-club/.

Christmas is Coming! Vánoce přicházejí! Vianoce klopú na dvere!
Do you have everything to make this Christmas special? Around your tree or table, munch on a selection of the famous Marlenka eclairs, honey cakes, or honey nuggets in vanilla or chocolate flavors. How about a packet of gingerbread spice made in Czech republic to spice up your hot chocolate or use in the last minute baking? Our Christmas teas and tea boxes offer the perfect accompaniment for the sweets.

Don't forget Christmas wafers! A Christmas tradition for Czech and Slovak households, these treats were made using traditional recipe and iron, and carry a beautifully festive Christmas design with candles and bells. The wafers are usually drizzled with honey and sprinkled with garlic and eaten by all gathered around Christmas Eve dinner table. Our Slovak friend living in Canada spends countless hours making these wafers so we all can enjoy our tradition away from our homelands. Thank you, Eva! Packages of 10 available.

Maybe you are looking for a special nativity scene decoration? We have three designs from three different materials to choose from. Give your kids the opportunity to build their own decorated by Josef Lada images. Hand painted and designed by Iowa artist Cheryl Smallwood-Roberts, you can decorate your mantel with this one of a kind ceramic set painted with bright colors to fit the splendor. And finally, the last specimen of a wooden nativity carved in Slovakia can warm your home with its gentle rustic feel.

Learn how to cook fish in a black sauce, which is the oldest Czech way of preparing Christmas Eve fish (usually carp). In our next virtual cooking class on December 6, you will substitute carp with white fish, but all other steps will be authentic. The sauce is a delicious combination of moderate fish flavor, caramel, spices and seasoning, and prunes. The meal will be completed by making traditional bread dumplings.

Incredible news from University of Iowa Libraries!

"An $11k grant from the GRAMMY Museum Grant Program will unlock the sounds of Czech American life, preserved for over a century on more than 170 cylinders like the one pictured. We’re beyond grateful to our partners here in Iowa and across the ocean for their combined efforts to give new life to this vibrant musical heritage.

Katie Buehner of the Rita Benton Music Library says: “[This grant] will allow everyone to experience a slice of Czech Americans’ cultural life, and researchers will have the opportunity to study Bohemian transplantation in the actual voice of those who made the journey.”
