Visit with an amazing and talented sculptor, Cara Briggs Farmer, on April 8th, 2016, 5-8pm at the ART CELLAR in Cedar Rapids.

Women who weld are a rare breed of badass, and I'm one of them. After an 8-year tenure building, engineering, and designing stage scenery in the Minneapolis/St. Paul theater scene I decided it was time to make art on my own terms. I returned to my home state of Iowa in 2008 and set up shop. Since then I've succeeded as both an artist and small business owner.

MIG welded steel is my primary medium. I am as comfortable designing and building with new materials as I am improvising with reclaimed steel. When I’m designing with a Prairie School aesthetic, the ratio Phi, or anything heavily geometric, I rely on CAD drafting and new steel to realize my vision. These pieces are intended to feel refined and offer the viewer a medium for contemplation, reflection, and inspiration. Other pieces start in the junk yard. Salvaged materials allow me to create art and fine furnishings which speak to the object’s past while inviting the viewer to re-imagine what is possible.

Looking for something to do? How about experiencing original art, meeting new people, and talking to the artists about their work. Best of all, the Art Cellar wants you to take home an original piece of art - free. The drawings are at 7:30pm on April 8, so there is plenty of time to stop in at the Art Cellar and receive your ticket for the drawings.
