Visit Mobilia this week (Thurs-Friday, 11-5 & Sat, 10-4) to view Gerri Rachins: Running Hot and Cold. The exhibition features a selection of new paintings by local artist Gerri Rachins. In Running Hot and Cold, Rachins’ most recent explorations involve a layered series of acrylic ink pours. The artist expertly manipulates the movement and flow of these liquid forms and colors. Then, brushes are loaded with Flashe vinyl paint, gouache, or acrylic. Rachins masterfully embellishes the surface with additional intricate details, exploring colors and shapes in vibrant, powerful, abstract compositions..

NAHOKO FUJIMOTO
Tanabata Series Earrings
2023
Polypropylene, pleated paper, magnet, sterling silver.

These earrings are made of special paper seen in the “Tanabata Matsuri,” or the Star Festival, which is a Japanese traditional event. The earrings transform themselves from two-dimensional shapes into three-dimensional form, neatly opening and closing using magnets.

According to legend, each July 7th, the weaver star and cowherd star traverse the Milky Way that separates them to renew their ancient bond of love. In Japan, the lovers are celebrated with lively pleated and folded decorations and wishes written on strips of colored paper.

“Since I was a little child I have been fascinated that with the form of this paper. The harmony created these delicate pleats evokes the sweet and pleasant memories of my childhood and the days when I played with my little daughters.” — Nahoko Fujimoto

Merrill Morrison for our exhibition Artists Celebrate the Legacy of Jack Lenor Larsen, part II

Dahlia - Pink, Lavender, Yellow. 2023. Embroidery. Cotton thread.
8 1/2” x 8 1/2” x 3”. $4,500.

In Spring 2008, I visited Jack Lenor Larsen’s Longhouse Reserve and took the photo below of Dale Chihuly’s cobalt glass reeds in the pond. While walking around the property, I was struck by the colors in both his gardens and art collection and found a passion for photographing beauty in nature.

When asked to submit an art piece for this show, I immediately thought of making an embroidered piece based on a photograph I had taken last year. This vibrant dahlia was a new challenge: approximately 50 colors of DMC embroidery thread and a hundred or more hours of stitching by hand.

TREES

2023
Double sided necklace. Polymer clay micromosaics by Cynthia Toops, Sterling silver metalwork and most wood elements by Dan Adams, glass beads, paper, amber.
20" l x 1/2" d. The largest bead is 1 1/2" w and the smallest bead is 3/4" w.

"Trees is the first piece we worked on. Each beads is associated with a particular tree. On one side is either a slice of wood or a product made rom the tree. On the reverse side is an animal that nests or feeds (bark, berries, fruit, leaves) on the tree. It was a fun project, but required a lot of research. We found ourselves asking questions like:
A. What tree did this wood come from?
B. What animals are associated with the tree or its environs?
C. what products are made from the tree?"
