"I used to take photos of walls and cars that appeared to be landscapes. Now, viewers think my photos are manipulated, though they aren’t. I’m attracted to patterns, colors, and illusions found in water, ice, and the intersection of the natural and man-made worlds. The photos, printed on fine art papers with archival inks, are often mistaken for paintings. The large print-size allows viewers to immerse themselves in the image."

"Script of the Unseen Watcher", Multimedia,16”x 20”, $300

This decalcomania explores the tension between chaos and control. The gray-green and turquoise, anchored by black suggest a deeply buried or submerged place. Orange and yellow sparks evoke hidden fire. Asemic white script whispers forgotten truths, while the all seeing eye watches silently. It is a meditation on unseen forces guiding our fragmented reality, where meaning dissolves and evolves, and persists in the shadows.

The artist thinks of art as language just beyond words, an expression of something that may not be able to be otherwise articulated in the moment. Shorr believes art is transformative to both the creator and the viewer. The experience of being a woman, disabled, and her beliefs, inform her energy and her work. While disability doesn’t define her, it does create obstacles and difficulties that often call for creative solutions. Shorr works in acrylics and oil, often incorporating metallics in her works, and enjoys trying new techniques and mediums as it keeps her inspired, as does community. Shorr’s work varies and includes portraiture and abstract work, the latter of which often includes multimedia, symbols, and inventive created languages. Shorr’s work has been shown in a variety of formal and informal venues, more recently including Cambridge Art Association, Fay Chandler Gallery, Jamaca Plain Library, Gilman Square Art and Music Fest, Beacon Hill Art Walk, The Menino Art Center in Hyde Park, Art Haus Gallery and Till Wave Gallery. She has also enjoyed community use of her images and artwork by NAMI, Mass Council of Churches, Till Wave Gallery, and Art in the Park for Child Hassem Park for fund raising and outreach.

I made these three pieces while living in an abusive situation with my fiancé’s sister. At present I have had almost 4 months of limited contact with her after having moved, gone to therapy, taken medication and done a lot of healing. Without writing a novel about what happened (I could), the living situation was insane. There was significant family pressure to continue to allow her to live with us and MANY excuses for her behavior. She would fly into a rage with little warning, and I was in a constant state of fight or flight. I began to develop trauma responses of tensing when I heard her footsteps, being hyper aware of her moods, and never being able to relax. Looking at this art from that perspective they can feel suffocating. But now after having healed for a few months, I feel like I’m coming back to myself. I see the representation of my natural empathy and care for others. I have always had the desire to help and I did not lose that despite the trauma.

These beautiful paintings are by artist Ray Rahul!

Rahul Ray, a Professor of Medicine and a Cancer Researcher at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA was trained in drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, India. He paints with watercolor, acrylic, oil, oil-pastel, and mixed media, watercolor being his favorite.
For the past four years Rahul has been teaching art regularly at Arts Wayland, Wayland, and the Council of Aging, Wayland, as well as giving private lessons. He has also conducted Art Therapy classes at Relay Pharma, Cambridge, MA (2024) and Google, Cambridge, MA (2025).
Rahul displays his art regularly at ArtsWayland, Wayland, and TillWave Gallery, Watertown, MA. He has also exhibited and sold his artwork at the Natick Center for Arts, Natick, MA (TCAN), Longfellow Club, Wayland, The Calcutta Club USA, Acton, MA, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, India, as well as public libraries in Natick, Sudbury, Wayland, and Wellesley, MA.

"Working in both traditional media and new media, I use strong color and symbols to portray complex emotions and ideas: the beauty of the natural world, environmental issues, spiritual and metaphysical themes. My pieces usually involve a great deal of research, and often many preliminary steps, which I enjoy documenting along with my process and the meaning (to me) of my works, in a “back- story” which accompanies every piece and is meant to be displayed with the work. I am a strong advocate for animals and the environment, democracy at home and abroad, and human rights for all, with a special focus of people who are autistic/neurodiverse. I live and work in Cambridge. Massachusetts and am represented by the AANE Artist Collaborative, Watertown, MA. I am happy to discuss commissions."

Today we are featuring Rachel Olin!

"The bird is seizing the moment by taking flight. He or she could stay safe by remaining in the nest. They could avoid falling or being eaten by predators,but then they would miss the chance of experiencing freedom and learning to survive by getting food.

Rachel Olin, formerly Rachel Olin Levy (married name) has been a passionate outsider artist her whole life, loving to paint mostly nature inspired works. She works mainly with watercolor, but experiments with mixed media such as gouache, oil pastel and acrylic and digital art. Rachel has participated in several art shows during her life, including during Gables Gallery Night and Art Basel. Rachel has also been the featured artist in the NSU-UM CARD‘s 2016 Tropical Nights. She has artwork/ an illustration in a literary anthology called Uncommon Minds: Autism Poetry and Prose.
She has been a part time librarian’s assistant for over 15 years and uses her love and knowledge of books and technology to assist the public and maintain the library database. Rachel graduated with B.A. in General Studies from Alfred University, a 4 year college known for its emphasis on the fine arts and alumni like Mackenzie Childs. (She did not apply to the art school program because she only wanted to paint animals and plants.) There she received a 3.3 Cumulative GPA and made the Dean's List several times despite her comorbid health issues. Determined and always working hard to achieve her goals, Rachel’s next goal is to become a successful artist."

"I was born and educated in Armenia. I pursued my graduate studies at the College of Arts and Professional Dance and Music in Moscow. My educational background in America was at Quinsigamond College and Becker College in Worcester. I was a star ballerina and traveled with a dance company to Europe, South America, the Middle East and another country. Now that I’m not working, I enjoy life with my hobbies like: drawing, painting, making jewelry, flowers, knitting and reading. Several years ago I started drawing, painting and it changed my life, making me feel peace, joy and love."
