This morning, we partnered with our friends at and to bring a piece of Birmingham’s industrial history to Sloss and give it a second life.
This Bement, Miles & Co. steam hammer was once part of the historic Hardie-Tynes foundry — a major manufacturer of mining equipment, steam turbines, and pressure vessels just two miles down the road from us.
In 2018, U-Haul acquired the Hardie-Tynes Co. complex as part of their corporate sustainability initiatives and carefully renovated and preserved the historic campus. They’ve generously donated this hammer to Sloss, where it will undergo restoration and return to working order, helping us tell the story of Birmingham’s industrial history through demonstrations and workshops.
Moving a 19,000 lb hammer takes serious equipment and an incredible team. We’re so grateful to CraneWorks for the expertise and care it took to make this move happen!
