Located in Birmingham AL, we are Alabama's only printmaking co-op, offering etching, intaglio, lithography, relief, silk screen, and digital facilities.

Come join us on Saturdays from 12-4 to see our current exhibitions and say hi! The mission of PaperWorkers Local is to enable and nurture the making, exhibition, and appreciation of original fine art prints and other works of art on paper.

For our next exhibition, Mary Ann Sampson is exhibiting her recent collection of work in her show titled "Pages from the Gel Plate"! The show will open on Thursday, September 10th from 6pm - 8pm and feature handmade books and new prints made from gelli plates! Come check out her amazing work!

Mary Ann Sampson is an artist based in Ragland, Alabama. She studied art at Birmingham Southern and Samford University before earning a Masters of Fine Arts in Book Arts from the University of Alabama and is an active member of the Guild of Book Workers. She is the founder of the One-Eye Opera Company, which publishes limited edition letterpress books, custom bookbinding and unique editions. In her artist statement she says,

“Handmade books are a personal stage and a memory stick for a life lived...a field for random thoughts and imagination. Flat works and three-dimensional pieces are mostly singular ideas that have fallen off the pages. It’s the plurality of techniques and materials that make them seem different.”

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, 6pm to 8pm at PaperWorkers Local, 2717 Seventh Avenue South, Suite 203, Birmingham, Alabama 35233. Following the opening reception, the exhibition can be seen during our regular gallery hours on Saturdays from noon to 4pm. The show closes on October 10, 2026.

Monoprint September is coming up! Mary Ann Sampson is teaching two wonderful 3-hour workshops that go with her upcoming show, "Pages from the Gel Plate". She will show participants the many uses for Gelli plates in her journal making and experimental collage classes. If you are wanting to print on something wearable, check out Celeste Pfau's botanical monoprinting on fabric workshop, where you will use plants and flowers to print your own scarf. We have started a new club at PaperWorkers Local! Join us every Wednesday from 5:30pm - 7:30pm for events ranging from open studios to demos to small classes. Join a community of Birmingham artists, make some friends, and learn something new. The Wednesday Print Club is free, open to the public, and would love to meet some new artists - no experience needed. Stop by and join us on Wednesdays!

Childhood in the South brings together two Southern printmakers
whose work reflects the enduring imprint of place, memory, and shared culture. Growing up in the South means moving to a distinct rhythm— long summers spent outdoors, stories passed around crowded tables, and family gatherings filled with food, laughter, love, and, at times, their opposites. These experiences become part of our collective psyche, shaping how we understand ourselves and how we are seen by others.

Nancy Carney Barnhart, a Birmingham native, has lived and worked in the South for most of her life. Upon retirement, she returned to her childhood home to pursue the artist’s life she had always hoped for. She utilizes a wide range of styles from traditional to digital. Her printmaking repertoire includes monotypes and photographic applications in intaglio, lithography, and cyanotype. She is a member of PaperWorkers Local.

Cat Blake is a printmaker and graphic designer pursuing themes of southern identity, culture, and temporality. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and is a senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning a BFA in graphic design and printmaking. She currently works as a graphic designer and is a member of PaperWorkers Local.

The opening reception will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 6 pm to 8 pm at PaperWorkers Local, 2717 Seventh Avenue South, Suite 203, Birmingham, Alabama 35233. Following the opening, the exhibition can be seen during our regular gallery hours on Saturdays from noon to 4 pm. The show closes on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
