We are The Breman: a cultural center where story keepers and story seekers come together to engage in dialogue, connect with history, and experience the arts. The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta celebrates and commemorates Jewish history, culture, and art through events featuring concerts, movies, books, discussions, genealogy, and group tours. Our three display areas feature The

Holocaust, Southern Jewish Heritage & History, and a constantly changing gallery of engaging themes ranging from the Art of Maurice Sendak to lifestyle displays of the art of Jewish cooking. Our museum also contains the Cuba Family Archives for Southern Jewish History, which houses thousands of manuscript and photograph collections, as well as hundreds of artifacts, textiles, and oral histories related to southern Jewish history and the Holocaust.

The Breman was thrilled to host the Fulton County Contract for Services Awards Mixer!

We heard from Fulton County staff, commissioners, community leaders, and more.

It was inspiring to be surrounded by creatives, mission-driven arts and culture organizations, and community partners working hard to keep the arts alive and thriving.

We are grateful to Fulton County for its continued support of the arts and its investment in the impact arts and culture have on our community. Thank you for celebrating this important work with us!

Meet our newest group of docents-in-training!

Last week, a new group of volunteers began training to become docents at The Breman. These are the wonderful people who lead our guided tours and help bring our exhibitions to life for every visitor who walks through our doors. Docents train to lead tours of "Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years 1933–1945," for groups ranging from K-12 classes to college students to seniors, as well as tours of "History with Chutzpah: The Southern Jewish Experience", our exhibition on Jewish life in the American South.

Becoming a docent at The Breman isn't just a one-afternoon commitment. Once trained, docents commit to leading at least one tour a month, every month, standing and speaking for a full hour at a time. Welcome to training, and thank you for stepping up!

Tomorrow is National Nonprofit Day and there’s no better time to talk about what we do.

Our Director of Development, Rob Mann, puts it simply: at The Breman, we have the privilege — and the obligation — of telling good stories. Stories about Jewish heritage, tolerance, history and culture. Our team at The Breman preserves these stories through photographs, artifacts, and docents who are living historians themselves.

None of it happens without support. Every exhibit, every docent-led tour, every story we're able to preserve and pass on is made possible by the funding and the community behind everything we do.

This National Nonprofit Day, thank you for helping us keep telling these stories.

Sometimes the stories we keep aren’t in picture or text form. Sometimes they’re embodied in the memories of the buildings where our community once stood.

Meet Ted Jonas and his family. Peggy Z”L and Oscar Jonas Z”L, and their children Ted, Marcy, Sarah and Sam were members of Temple Beth El in Dalton, Georgia. Dalton’s Jewish community was small but had a significant footprint, shaping the region’s textile economy as well as its cultural life through years of support for the arts.

When Temple Beth El’s congregation moved on and the building faced demolition, a ten-foot stained glass window, including a panel depicting the Lion of Judah, was at risk of being lost with it. Ted and his siblings stepped up, funding the window’s removal themselves two years before the building came down. We are now proud to have this piece in our collection at The Breman, where we make sure that a remarkable community won’t be forgotten just because the building it called home is no longer standing.

This week in history: thirty years ago, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics became the stage for a historic moment for the Jewish community, led by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta.

For 24 years, the world had never formally paused to remember the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed in the Munich massacre of 1972. It took a dedicated campaign by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to change that. Their advocacy led the International Olympic Committee to finally honor the victims during the Closing Ceremony of the Atlanta Games — the first time they'd been recognized on an Olympic stage.

That same summer, another piece of Jewish Atlanta history took root: the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum opened its doors, giving our community a permanent home to preserve and share its stories. This year marks The Breman's 30th anniversary, and this story is one of several milestones we're celebrating this year.

Thirty years later, we're proud of the stories this community has made and remembered.

Last weekend, The Breman hosted an unforgettable afternoon celebrating the Buhkarian Jewish experience with Liat Tzionov, owner of Crazy Apron. It was a wonderful afternoon of culture, connection, and community. Thank you to all who joined us!
