Membership is open to everyone and all media. Each month we have a demonstration or presentation by a local art professional.

Celebrating our 25th anniversary, the Rio Grande Art Association (RGAA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the education and promotion of New Mexico artists. The Rio Grande Art Association's monthly meetings (no meetings in July or December) give you an opportunity to meet other artists, learn some techniques to flex your art muscles, and to inspire your creativity! Each year we sponsor a national juried show, Encantada; and co-sponsor Masterworks of New Mexico, which features the work of New Mexico artists. We welcome anyone interest in art, particularly those artists who work in oils, acrylics, casein, egg tempera, oil pastels, encaustic, mixed media, or any of the painting media that are exhibited without glass.

Workshop: Carol Mell: Encaustic Painting
November 10, 11, and 12, 9 am to 4 pm
The process of painting with melted beeswax and resin can produce a rich alchemy of color and texture to create something new and often unexpected. Whether you paint landscapes, figures or abstracts, in this three-day workshop we will learn the basic application and fusing techniques with molten encaustic medium, as well as additional ways to apply texture, color, marks and ephemera for a rich and layered painting.

This workshop is designed for painters of all levels and all materials will be provided. Proper tools, studio methods and safety procedures will be discussed. Each student will be provided with small painting panels for practice and one larger panel for a finished work. All levels welcome.

Encantada Workshop: The Emotional Impact of Composition. November 17-19, 9-4 pm at the Hispanic Building, EXPO NM

Paul’s workshop will focus on Composition. This includes color, value, and, oddly, subject matter. We’ll explore the emotional impact of composition, one of Paul’s main concerns in painting, and also talk about unusual compositions and risk-taking in painting. We will also spend some time learning about what could only be called, cheap tricks. While Paul is primarily a “representational” painter, we’ll spend a lot of time talking and producing art that pushes the boundaries of this style of painting. Allison is a full-time artist in Albuquerque. Using mindful, intuition, and somatic expression via creative dance parties, she channels her creativity into emotive and colorful abstract paintings.

Step into the studio with artist Michele Byrne for an
inspiring, talk and slide show to understand her love for
Cobra Artist water-mixable oils. Since 2009, Michele has
explored the possibilities of these beautifully creamy paints,
and as a Royal Talens Ambassador, she’s mastered the
techniques that bring out their full potential. She’ll share her
favorite mediums and insider tips for achieving her signature
dramatic style.

Mini Drawing Lesson - Sean Hudson ~ Seeing Simply - distilling a few essential ideas and techniques from Sean's approach to painting the landscape in watercolor

Educational Program Presenter - Ming Franz - Dancing with Acrylics. Ming will be demonstrating acrylic pouring, an abstract art technique where fluid acrylic paints are poured on a surface creating bold, colorful, and innovative art. Her "splash" painting technique, which combines watercolor with Chinese ink and brush, is truly mesmerizing.
