Maria Uhase: Botanical Watercolor: Beardtongue

This illustration depicts the Beardtongue plant (Penstemon digitalis), another type of pollinator plant located in the Akron Art Museum’s garden. It can grow 2-5 ft. tall, has dark-red, oblong-shaped leaves, and white, tubular flowers which bloom from April to June. The particular markings and shape of the leaves are especially useful as a landing pad for pollinating insects.

Pollinating plants like this support the survival of insects, which in turn support us. Unfortunately the populations of native bees, butterflies, and other insect pollinators have been declining for decades due to causes such as habitat destruction and the use of pesticides. Not only do insects pollinate the crops that feed us, but they also are the base for the entire ecosystem. Birds, small mammals, toads, and many other species all rely on insects for food, which carries on up the food web.

Along with this illustration of the beardtongue plant I included a depiction of a hummingbird moth, an essential pollinating insect native to Ohio. These moths, unlike many insects, are able to hover and retrieve the nectar from plants that lack leaves to act as landing pads for them. In my work I often like to give a surreal touch to the animals I depict, but sometimes nature provides that for me. Hummingbird moths look like their name suggests; a cross between a bird and an insect.

Hi - what is the best way to reach someone at the Art Museum currently? I tried to email 1-2 weeks ago and have not received a reply. I do understand you are closed again and may have limited staff availability. It doesn't seem I can contact you via Messenger. Could someone please try to message me if possible? I am doing class research and would like to fill in some "blanks" I have regarding your response to COVID-19. I cannot find the information on your website is everything is blank again with the newest closure. Thank you!
Is thursdays still free and is ot free other days as well?
Thank you team at the Akron Art Museum for continuing to further the mission of our wonderful institution. We are all very grateful to you and your efforts during this very difficult time. We shall rise again stronger and wiser than ever before. #weareallinthistogether #unitedwestand #livecreative

anyone remember the painted stairs at the art museum in the 1970s? Would love to see a photo. I remember a rainbow 🌈 and lots of bright colors. We have quarantine chalk fatigue and I am thinking of letting the kids paint the front steps 🙃
