Abstract Expressionist, Mark Rothko, uses large, flat expanses of color in his work. 'Untitled' is an early example of how he applied thin layers of color over one another to create radiant canvases. Happy birthday Mark Rothko!

In this print, Flint combined the strong contours of etching with aquatint. With this potent combination, Flint was able to render many specific details in his figures’ hands, faces, and clothing, while also adding richness to the scene with a variety of broad gray tones and an application of gritty atmosphere. Learn more about this print in today's blog post.

Photo Transfer Process

I began to use a photo-transfer process to create the environment around the figures as a way to immerse them in their surroundings and further balance the image. As the people are built up through the ink drawing, the photographic landscape breaks down during the printmaking process. I use dry process printouts, taken from family photo albums or a collection of photos I’ve taken, covering the printed side with a combination of acrylic gesso and matte medium gel. After the medium dries, the paper backing is rubbed off with a wet sponge, leaving behind a layer of acrylic and ink “glued” to the drawing surface.

Botanical Watercolor: Butterfly Milkweed Plant

What I enjoy the most about being a visual artist is using my work to express and present the things I’m passionate about to others. The subject matter I choose is usually nature-themed since I love to be immersed in it, and it gives us so much in return when we pay attention to it. With what I’ve learned about plants and nature through my own studies, and with my still progressing techniques in watercolor, I hope to share a few tidbits of info about some of the environment’s most necessary plants.

This video shows the creative process of an illustration of a Butterfly Milkweed plant (Asclepias tuberosa), a species of pollinator plant native to Akron’s environment and one of the varieties found in the Akron Art Museum’s garden from June to August.

Pollinator plants are some of the most important types to be included in gardens and in nature. They help sustain native bees, butterflies, various types of birds, and other pollinating insects that are vital to the health of the environment. They typically feature bright flowers that attract insects, and have foliage to house them.

Native Butterfly Milkweed is an essential food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars, and the nectar feeds adult monarchs and other insects. The plant typically grows 2 - 5 feet tall, and has small, star-shaped flowers that grow in clusters designed for pollination.
