It’s wonderful to see how 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖 has brought together friends, family and visitors from Singapore, Jakarta, West Sumatra and beyond, sharing conversations around the works of Singaporean artist Jeffrey Wandly.

From familiar faces to new acquaintances, these moments have become part of our journey, reminding us why art matters: not only for what we see on the canvas, but also the connections it makes possible.

With the 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 until 17 October, there is still time to experience 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢 in person. We look forward to welcoming you!

By popular interest, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖, a solo exhibition by Jeffrey Wandly, will continue at Hadiprana Gallery for 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 until 17 October 2026.

Bringing together stories of Mangkabau heritage, family, music, and the cities of Singapore and Jakarta, 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢 has been a meaningful journey, a meeting of artistic and cultural connections between two countries.

Thank you to everyone who has visited, shared, and sent wishes. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit, we’d love to see you at the exhibition, in the final week before it closes.

An exhibition is never just about the artworks. It is also about the people who come, the conversations that unfold, and the connections made along the way.

Since the opening of 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖, a solo exhibition by Jeffrey Wandly at Hadiprana Gallery, we have been touched by the warm response from visitors in Jakarta, as well as friends who have made the journey from Singapore to view with the exhibition.

Every visit, conversation and expression of encouragement has meant a great deal to us. Thank you for making time for Jeffrey’s work, for sharing in his personal journey through heritage, history and culture, and for being part of this chapter of 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢.

To our friends and new acquaintances in Jakarta and Singapore, family and everyone who has walked through the gallery doors—thank you for being part of the journey!

From the historic streets of JAKARTA, to the familiar cityscapes of SINGAPORE, Jeffrey Wandly’s paintings bring together two worlds—the old and the new, the places we inherit and the ones we discover along the way.

Perhaps this is also what 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢 means, journeying from one’s homeland to another, remaining rooted in one’s heritage and values, and discovering something of ourselves in the places we encounter.

Two cities, two histories, but through ink and acrylic finding the architecture, and the human connection, in both.

The 𝐴𝑙𝑢𝑛𝑎𝑛 𝐵𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑎 series is a tribute from Jeffrey Wandly to his late father. Wandly Yazid was a composer, arranger, musician, a violinist in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and member of Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD) who studied under the renowned West Sumatran painter Wakidi before leaving for Singapore in the late 1940s. Music was the reason for his 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢, the pursuit that carried him to a new life, and eventually, a family.

In this series, Jeffrey steps away from the architectural exploration that defines his cityscapes. The violins are rendered loosely, abstractly, form dissolving, the music is felt in the movement of lines and the energy of the brushstrokes. It’s a different kind of homage, more of an impression of what his father gave him—a sense of rhythm, movement, and art.

Before 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖 takes us through the streets of Jakarta and Singapore, it began in the Minangkabau heartland of West Sumatra, where Jeffrey Wandly’s parents came from. His late father, Wandly Yazid, arrived in Singapore in the late 1940s, carrying with him a deep connection to the culture, music and artistic traditions of his homeland.

That journey continues through Jeffrey’s paintings. The Rumah Gadang ancestral houses representing the two sides of his family serve as a prologue to the exhibition: a return to the origins before the journey…

For Jeffrey, 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑢 is not simply about leaving one’s homeland, but what we carry with us, the memories, stories, culture, music, and a sense of where we come from.

Hadiprana Gallery was filled last Sunday for an engaging 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with Jeffrey Wandly, moderated by Nadine Mustikarini.

The floor opened up to a lively Q&A, including questions from architects in the audience curious about Jeffrey’s process—how he moves from architectural drawing to architectural painting, translating structure and line into the fluid, expressive brushwork that defines his cityscapes.

This was followed by a walkthrough of the exhibition, Jeffrey sharing the stories behind individual works—from the streets of Kota Tua to the Rumah Gadang of his mother’s and late father’s families in West Sumatra.

We were equally honoured to welcome Pak Insan Abdirrohman, Direktur Pengembangan Budaya Digital, Kementerian Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia, to the opening of Jeffrey Wandly’s solo exhibition, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖, at Hadiprana Gallery last Saturday. We’re also grateful for the presence and support of representatives from the Embassies and Consulates of the Netherlands, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Switzerland, and Canada, as well as from regional institutions including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the ASEAN Secretariat.

Your presence made the evening all the more meaningful as we came together to celebrate art, heritage, culture and connections, bringing communities closer across borders.

We were honoured to welcome our Guest of Honour, Ambassador of Singapore to Indonesia H.E. Kwok F**k Seng and his lovely wife Mdm Pearl Kwok to the opening of 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒖, Jeffrey Wandly’s solo exhibition, last Saturday at Hadiprana Gallery! Thanks to all who joined us for this special evening celebrating the cultural and friendship ties between Singapore and Indonesia.
