The Art Scoop: In 1932, Australia went to war against emus. Around 20,000 of the flightless birds were wreaking havoc on Western Australian farmland, so the government sent in soldiers armed with machine guns. The emus scattered into small groups, outran the soldiers and lived to fight another day. After six days and 2,500 rounds of am******on, the army withdrew, only to return for a second unsuccessful campaign. Australia had been outsmarted by a flightless bird.

Bendor Grosvenor has a plan B: art handler. 😏

Before changing careers, though, he decided to see how AI would fare against some old fashioned art detective work involving a previously unknown 17th century portrait.

The machines took a crack. The humans took a crack.

For more than two decades, Markus Klinko has worked with some of music’s most recognisable names, creating images that have become part of how we remember them.

In “Beyoncé, Dangerously in Love”, he photographed Beyoncé at the beginning of her solo career, capturing not only who she was, but who she was about to become.

“Lady Gaga, Hello Kitty” brings together glamour, eccentricity and pop fantasy in an image that could only be Gaga.

And “Billie Eilish” captures another artist with an unmistakable visual identity, and another moment in contemporary music history.

Three very different artists, each with their own place in pop culture. Three portraits that show how a powerful image can help create an icon 📸

Once upon a time, facial recognition sounded like something reserved for governments and spy movies. 👀

Nearly a decade ago, artist Trevor Paglen used faces from a US government dataset to explore how machines were being taught to recognise us.

Fast forward to today and facial recognition is part of everyday life. We use our faces to unlock phones, log into apps and access services without giving it a second thought.

Convenience, service, safety. In return, we give machines access to our identity. That’s the trade-off.

Paglen’s new 20-year retrospective brings together work exploring surveillance, military technology and machine learning.

Turns out the science fiction bit wasn't so fictional after all 🤖
