French duo Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel’s films play like an uber-cool mixtape on shuffle: shoegaze heartbreak on 16mm one minute, video game worlds the next, a CGI baby having a breakdown after that. Before choke enough, they cast ambient pop star Oklou as the singer of a band called Knife Fight.

Hypnotic Bursts brings their shorts to Singapore together for the first time, including After School Knife Fight (2017), starring a pre-fame Oklou.

Meet Azian Nurudin. In her signature shades and leather jacket, she talks us through her work and the themes behind it.

From 1986 to 2001, the Malaysian-American artist prowled the streets of San Francisco with her cameras. She filmed q***r desire and solidarity between the height of the LGBTQ revolution and the turmoil of the AIDS epidemic. Made with a “bratty” collective of women artists, her twelve films are charged with sexual and political tension, and tender underneath.

Fresh from Q***r East Festival, The Compiled Tapes presents the first complete retrospective of her work.

Late night tales, turned up to a heady maximalism of passion and pleasure. Our inaugural Objectifs Short Film Festival closes with a celebration of q***r desire through the compiled tapes of Malaysian-American artist Azian Nurudin. Made in San Francisco between the height of its LGBTQ movement and the turmoil of the AIDS epidemic, these twelve films move through cracking whips, leather jackets and baju kurung. They’re charged with sexual and political tension, yet carry a current of tenderness and delicate feeling underneath. Curated by Sasha Han, Renee Ng and Daryl Cheong.

The deeply human films of auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda carry a quiet documentary sensibility, even in the acclaimed fiction features that made his name, from Like Father, Like Son to Shoplifters. To look back at the legend, we’re bringing two of his early short documentaries to the screen, tracing how those first years behind the camera shaped the award-winning career that followed.

In one, a class of elementary school students adopts a cow named Laura. In the other, Kore-eda investigates how pollution from a steel factory left locals struggling with asthma, a story that feels all too close to home in this season of haze. Life imitates art, and art imitates life, or so they say. Catch the screening and meet the filmmaker in person this October.
