Helmed by the same team from artcommune gallery, AC43 Gallery is committed to the sustainable growth of of the Singapore art ecosystem and aim to be a platform that supports local artists and nurtures art literacy amongst the general public. We extend our heartiest congratulations to artist Tang Kok Soo on his solo exhibition, EMPTINESS FULL OF LIFE, now presenting at AAAC Gallery!

Unveiling nearly a decade of private studio practice (2016–2025), this showcase brings together a rare body of work by the 2016 UOB Painting of the Year (Gold Award) winner. Curated by AAAC Gallery Founder Jonathan Toh, step into a world of stripped-down geometry, restrained palettes, and subtle grids: meditative paintings built to be experienced slowly.

What if we looked at the legacy of Singapore art through an entirely new lens? 🔎

While Singaporean art history is deeply rooted in pioneering spirit and regional landscape traditions, artist Ng Wai Choy's practice takes a different path, shifting away from collective cultural narratives and moving toward inward, universal questions of life.

His works offer a profound alternative approach to Nanyang art, guiding us away from the external world and inviting us into a space of individual spiritual introspection.

Did you know? 🔎

While many know Ng Wai Choy for his established background in writing, his creative journey actually began with a paintbrush. Starting from the age of 5, art, not the written word, was his very first medium of expression. Eschewing the conventional academic path, Ng enrolled at the Baharuddin Vocational Institute to study art after attending secondary school and later pursued applied arts at the Central School of Art in London, demonstrating a clear commitment to artistic practice.

During the 1980s, Ng embarked on a remarkable journey across 109 countries and more than 200 cities. Supporting himself by drawing portraits, taking on odd jobs, and selling ink paintings in Chinatown, he immersed himself in experiences that would later inform his creative practice. Over the next two decades, he built an illustrious literary career, publishing 27 books on travel, culture, and everyday life. Finally, at the age of 48, Ng made a full return to painting, describing the transition as “not a delayed decision, but a natural turning shaped by accumulated life experience.”

SPIRIT IN MOTION showcases this foundational passion, highlighting a lifelong dedication to visual language that predates his literary work 🎨✨

What if a circle is more than just a shape? 🌀✨

Circular forms and spiralling lines are among the most recognisable visual motifs featured in Ng Wai Choy's practice. Speaking to exhibition curator Yang Jye-ru, the artist explains, "in geometry, triangles evoke a sense of the sacred, squares convey stability, but the circle corresponds to something familiar within human nature: wholeness."

Ng Wai Choy utilises circles and spirals in his works not merely as aesthetic choices, but as a formal language of his worldview representing wholeness, nature, and the "natural physical state of the universe."

These powerful motifs guide the viewer's gaze through movement, diffusion, and convergence, ultimately symbolising a spiritual aspiration toward liberation and the cyclical nature of existence.

Unlike the dominant social narrative of linear progress and measurable success, artist Ng Wai Choy’s practice proposes a life defined by “spirals, curves, and deviations.” His work reminds us that true growth is found not in a straight line, but through detours, returns, and the continuous reconfiguration of direction.
