Artist Ho Sou Ping, an aerospace engineer-turned-artist started painting when he was just 13. But in those days, art was not a common profession and no one propagated the idea of pursuing one's interest," he said. Convincing himself that art should be "done on the sidelines", he focused on his academics and even went on to do a master's degree in Business. But he never gave up on his art. He always found time to paint "Sometimes I get so engrossed in painting, I forget to eat," he said. Despite doing well in his corporate life, he set himself a deadline to retire at 50 to paint full-time. After making a conscious decision to go full-time, things fell into place. He found two sponsors who were willing to invest in his venture as silent partners. He finally opened artcommune gallery in October 2009. artcommune gallery was born.

Choice Picks Special | Lim Tze Peng

Lim Tze Peng (b. 1921 - d. 2025) became a full-time artist after retiring as the principal of Sin Min School in 1981. Though largely self-taught, he found critical and commercial success over the years with a dynamic body of ink work that capture the bustling alleys and multicultural landscapes of early Singapore. The works feature Malay Kampongs, Chinatown, Singapore River and other everyday scenes that were on course to disappear as the young country embarked on a swift and relentless phase of urban modernisation in the 1980s. These paintings—composed mostly en plein air between the 1970s and 1980s—continue to stand today as precious documents of a bygone era and reflect a distinct cultural character of early Singapore life.
