THE WORLD’S BEST VAGHIREH
19th century + Ziegler + Vaghireh?
This is the kind of piece every dealer dreams of finding - and exactly why we do what we do: discovering what others can only dream about.
So why is this piece so rare?
First of all, Vaghirehs were typically woven in very small formats, whereas this example is unusually large.
Ziegler & Co. produced very few Vaghirehs - or at least only a limited number have survived to this day.
Its magnificent design combines two historic Persian motifs: the Hunting design and the Three Trees design.
The Three Trees motif depicts the Cypress tree, the Tree of Life, and the Weeping Willow, symbolizing the three stages of life: childhood, adulthood, and old age.
For those unfamiliar with Vaghirehs: a Vaghireh is a rug sampler showing various field and border design options for larger carpets through carefully woven sections at their original scale. They were usually made in very small sizes and presented to clients in workshops, allowing them to select the desired design and color palette before a full commission was woven.
This exceptional pictorial masterpiece possesses all the qualities to be considered the rarest antique Vaghirehs ever produced.
