Several of the paintings from this year’s big painting expedition. Florence Rome Switzerland Chamonix Paris Poland. If all goes well, the studio sale with these pieces will be in three weeks!

This is another throwback to May. It ended up being a four morning Painting. I had the idea to paint the horses in the early morning light, and me thinks it went better than unexpected.

I remember on the first day setting up, early in the morning before anyone was in the Square, and before there was any light on the statue. As the morning went on, the sun started to peek over the Palazo’s on the other side of the square, and the light slowly worked it’s way down from the top of the statue until it was lighting up all of the water.

Right around 8:57 I was promptly kicked out by La Polizia, so I knew I could only paint until about 8:45 each morning before the patrols started. And so I did.

In this painting, I tried to leave the horses more and focus, and create somewhat of a focal point, leaving other parts of the painting much looser and suggested. If I had gone and painted every droplet, it could have been a real disaster.

This is the last still image I have to share of the large paintings from this year in Florence. They’ll all be available in my studio sale next month. There is a very wide area along the closest river to my family in Poland which is considered a flood zone. Nothing gets build, and it’s mostly fields of grass that get mowed and turned to bales for dairy cows.

Some painters might think there’s nothing more boring than painting some flat fields, but I disagree. The amount of atmospheric perspective you see in the distance, along with the full zones of the skies is beautiful. Simple, yet beautiful.

This was a slightly larger planner than I usually do, around a 12 x 16”, and I was really happy with how quickly the color came together. I remember not using a tone for this canvas, and using a bit more solvent than I usually would. I’m trying to get fast faster at larger scales, and I’m seeing some progress there.

This painting is of the St Matthew niche of Orsanmichele. It was done In Florence in May, on days where it was overcast. Even though the statue is mostly in shade on sunny days, the bouncing sunlight off of other buildings and ambients blues of the sky can completely change the scene.

I particularly liked the deep and mysterious shadows that formed around the face and robes. The bronze had interesting notes of emeralds, which played off of the color of the marble.

Usually the trick to making shadows read as if they are full of atmosphere and air, is to hold a little bit of value back in reserve. Think if your value scale is white as 0 and black as 10, it’s way better to keep your shadows in the 6-8 range. This is especially effective because it helps make sure your shadows are colorful.

i’m back home now, after 3 1/2 months of painting in Italy, Switzerland, France, and Poland. The final tally is 84 canvases, though not all of these are finished. There are a few that are just going to get tossed, and a handful that still need some final touch ups.

If this painting looks familiar, it’s because a few weeks ago I posted a larger version of it. But this smaller version was done first. The building in the Painting is Orsanmichele, in Florence.

I think I’ve spent several weeks in Florence in the spring for four years in a row now. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it has a vibrant Artist community, so it’s always been fun to go back.

I’ve also made a number of paintings of Orsanmichele’s exterior niches - which are adored by sculptures from some of the Renasant’s greatest artists - I was allowed to paint inside on several occasions.

One part of the building that always captivated me The exterior arches that were filled in, sometime when the building transitioned into a church (i think?)

The weather stone and rosette (?) design is incredible, and even more so as the sun just starts to peak over and catch the details in raking light.

There’s still some more paintings I have to get around to sharing for the beginning of this spring trip. I’ll be doing that soon, and soon these paintings will be available through a studio sale on my website. It feels like it’s been raining more than usual this summer. I remember I was moving locations on this day, and had some time to paint while on the road.

I knew rain was in the forecast, but I had nothing else to do. I found a nice enough spot, and there were some interesting clouds on the horizon. In the end I was lucky the worst of the storms stayed to my left and right, and I was able to only have to hide in the car for a short amount of time, but otherwise managed to get away with painting from the trunk of the car.

It was an interesting scene with the tumbling large cumulus clouds being overshadowed by a large stratus cloud. The shadows were an interesting silver blue against a clear sky on the horizon, and the atmosphere perspective created pale oranges in the distance.

I’m finally running out of canvases. I think I’ll keep Painting here in Poland for another two weeks, and then I have a busy schedule when I get back to the states - including preparing a sale of all these pieces!
