Here’s a short color tip - I had to remind myself of this today, as i had a lot of trouble capturing the color of the wheat in shadow.
when we are painting, the most contrast we could achieve is between titanium white and Ivory black. It’s so much more limited than the colors of the real world.
If we try to capture the contrast of the real world with our oil paint, we may lose the color. Color exists in the middle tones, between white and black. So if you want to get better Color, you need to compare what you see to a true shadow.
And one of the quickest ways to do that is just by making a circle with your hand! Look at the lights, look at the shadows, and then look at the edge where both of them meet!
