Today is the 175th anniversary of the opening of the first railway in Norfolk, the Yarmouth and Norwich Railway. Opened on 30th April 1844, this is the line which is the current The Wherry Lines route via Brundall, Buckenham, Cantley, Reedham and Berney Arms.

The opening day had a ceremonial journey for 200 passengers and a Brass Band and completed the 20 and a half mile journey in just 44 minutes (7 minutes slower than today’s average time over the same route)

The line would be known as the Yarmouth and Norwich for just over a year before being amalgamated into the Norwich and Brandon Railway in June 1845, this then became the Great Eastern Railway in 1862, this became the secondary route to Great Yarmouth in 1883, when the shorter route via Acle opened.

As of 2019 the Wherry Lines are undergoing modernisation with the route from Reedham to Great Yarmouth closed until February 2020.

It’s #Worldbookday one of our engines, Edward Thomas, is a scale model of one engine found on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales, this Railway was the basis for the Skarloey Railway in the original Thomas Books the Railway Series. Edward Thomas appeared in the books as Peter Sam. Seen here on the cover of book 10 in the series, one of the illustrations of him in the book and the real engine next to the man himself, the Rev W Awdry.

If books about miniature railways are something you’d like to get hold of, the Peter's Railway books are available from our Museum featuring many how things work sections, and stories involving Fiery Fox.

Would you like to help run the railway? We have vacancies for volunteer staff in most roles, you could be a Train Driver (steam or electric), Signalman (or more accurately Signalperson), Guard, Boat Skipper, assist with our catering team, man (or woman) our museum, the world is your oyster.

As a Guard, you can start from age 10.

If you're interested, why not come along to one of our Running days to check out your preferred job and talk to our current volunteers. Remember to pick up a "Joint Friends" application form, and complete it as a first step.

Exactly 60 years ago today. The last train to pass Honing East Signal Box was approaching. It was due past at 22:08. Once the train was beyond the next section 7-5-5 was rang on the block bells (Closing of Signalbox)

Thankfully just 8 years later the box was moved to Barton House Railway where it currently stands and has done for 51 years now.

17/02/2019

Winter maintenance work underway, making the line to Riverside East a little less of a rollercoaster.

16/12/2018

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves today as much as we did! If anyone has any photos that you are happy for us to use, please send them to us. Especially if there are any ‘Elfies’ with the man himself.

Also our ‘Have a go’ Junior Club is Saturday. Message the page if you have any young children that would like to come and try driving their own train or pulling levers in the signal box or even waving the flag.

12/08/2018

Well we are almost half way through the holidays.
Are you looking for some thing free for the children to do? Do the children like trains? We have the answer...
Why don't you bring them along to our 'Have a go' Junior day this Saturday the 18th August between 11 and 2pm. They will get the chance to drive an electric engine, be a guard, check tickets and even see how the full size signal box works. Depending on the age and ability they may even be able to have a go at pulling a lever. There will be a small buffet after the event which a small donation would be gratefully received. Please confirm if you are coming so we know numbers to cater for.
If they enjoy the day why not join up to the Junior Club. There is just a small charge of £10 per adult and £5 per child for a years memberships.
If you are interested then please get in touch for more details
