Tonight sees the launch of a most contemporary historical beer....

The Norfolk X Flanders collaboration beer 'Strangers Red' goes live tonight at The Plough.

Join Grain Brewery from 6pm at The Plough when you can try samples of modern Belgian beers brewed by their brewery twins in and around Leuven.

You’ll see a live stream to the taproom at brouwerijdecoureur in Leuven, Belgium, as they countdown and join their Belgian brewing buddies in launching their new beer ‘Strangers’ Red’ from both sides of the channel.

From 7pm they’ll be giving away some tasters of both the Norfolk and Flanders version of the beer so you can discover the difference in local water and ingredients.

A very pleasant afternoon spent with Dr Francesca Vanke as she took the lovely English+ group to see their art work in the beautiful 'Turner and changing visions of landscape' exhibition Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. We asked participants of English+ to send us images of landscapes that resonated with them. Artist practitioner, Holly Sandiford ArtatWork CIC, then worked with the group to bring the images together with the addition of natural elements to create this larger collaborative piece. Participants chose their landscapes because of the memories and feelings that these places evoked. Landscapes were submitted from individuals’ home countries, others fondly remembered holidays with family and others local scenes from their new home in Norfolk. Collaboratively, the artwork demonstrates the many ways people consider and emotionally respond to the idea of a landscape for them.

Something wonderful is coming this way next month....

We are delighted to announce our major new exhibition: JMW Turner and changing visions of landscape, 19 October 2024 - 23 February 2025.

The exhibition will explore artists' approaches to landscape from the 17th century to the present day, commencing the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the birth of JMW Turner, one of the most influential artists in the history of western art.

JMW Turner and changing visions of landscape explores the evolution of landscape art, centring on Turner's influence, whose landscapes conveyed a full range of artistic, historical and emotional meanings.

Using Turner's multi-faceted vision as a starting point, this exhibition journeys through landscapes real, imagined, dramatic, comforting, nightmarish, fragile and beautiful.

Featuring works by some of the most celebrated British landscape artists alongside exciting contemporary works, JMW Turner and changing visions of landscape reveals the breadth and complexity of human concerns surrounding landscape, and our changing attitudes to the natural world.

The exhibition compares his visionary approach with those who influenced him, like Claude Lorrain, Ruisdael and Canaletto, and those he inspired, from John Sell Cotman to Govinda Sah.

Renowned twentieth-century artists like Paul Nash and contemporary figures such as Ibrahim Mahama, Emma Stibbon, and Henna Nadeem demonstrate the ongoing relevance of landscape in art.

JMW Turner and changing visions of landscape will bring together, for the first time ever, four of his paintings of the Bridges at Walton. Painted between 1805-1840s, each painting gives a completely different character to this one location, offering a glimpse into his evolving style.

The exhibition is generously supported by Norfolk Museums Service, East Anglia Art Fund WSP, Arts Council England The National Lottery Heritage Fund Art Fund Norfolk County Council.

Queen Elizabeth has sent word by messenger. The food where she is currently residing is too good and the toilets are not yet full so she is planning to stay a good while longer. This sadly means that she will not be joining us at Strangers' Hall tomorrow (Wednesday 28th) but Mistress Sotherton has been so looking forward to the visit she is determined that the party will go on. Please come and join us, and Mistress Sotherton, for live music, dancing, games and creative activities galore.
