STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. The Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway - a railway network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was regarded as the most advanced in the world.

Here we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D Day Landings with two of the many superb images from the STEAM Picture Library*. They illustrate how the GWR played an important role in wartime.

The top photo shows one of the first batch of 12 motor landing craft being built in February 1942 at the GWR Swindon Works, inside No.13 Wagon Frame Shop in the Carriage and Wagon Works. The image on the bottom left features Motor Landing Craft (MLC) No.153, built by the GWR.

The motor landing craft were commissioned by the Ministry of Supplies among many other items produced by the GWR for the war effort, in readiness for the invasion of Europe.

The main purpose of the motor landing craft was to ferry troops from transport ships onto occupied shores. The flat bottom construction meant the craft could run up onto a beach and the lowerable ramp allowed the troops to swiftly disembark. These GWR-built landing crafts, and many variations built by other manufacturing companies, were used during the Second World War for amphibious assaults on enemy occupied Europe, including the D Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944.

The above information is used courtesy of STEAM Assistant Curators, Felicity Jones and Elaine Arthurs from their book entitled Wartime GWR. The book costs Β£25 and is available at the STEAM Shop inside the museum and also online from: www.easycatalog.net/home/steamshop

To mark Volunteers' Week here's a small selection of pics showing just some of the amazing things our STEAM volunteers do for the museum.

If you've been to our fortnightly 'Meet the Railway Workers' Saturdays, you'll have met some of our friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who love to invite visitors to get onto the footplate - up onto King George V, City of Truro and Caerphilly Castle!

We also have volunteers taking part in our popular 'We'll Meet Again' wartime experience for schools that runs every year in Spring and Autumn. Other volunteer activities range from interacting with visitors and answering their questions about STEAM's exhibits, to giving our locos a very well-deserved polish and doing invaluable archive work in the STEAM Library.

Thank You to all our volunteers who kindly offer their time and dedication to help the museum achieve its goals. We couldn't do it without you!

Happy #NationalGardeningWeek! Did you know? In about 1894, the Great Western Railway began to hold annual competitions for the best station garden. The competitions were a way of encouraging staff to have pride in their station, and the winners were even awarded a cash prize and a special mention in the GWR magazine.

The gardens ranged in style from pots of flowers and hanging baskets, to flower borders and topiary. Some stations even had full scale gardens complete with vegetable patch.

The station gardens pictured below were featured in the 1907 GWR Magazine.
