STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. The Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway - a railway network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was regarded as the most advanced in the world.

Did you know that today is National Biscuit Day?

In honour of the day we thought we would share with you this photograph from our archives. This is a Swindon built GWR van that has been hired out to biscuit makers, Macfarlane Lang. On top of the van is a roof box advertising Granola Digestives and Oval Osbornes.

What is your favourite biscuit? Let us know in the comments!

Our Multaka Swindon volunteers have been researching the Laboratory at Swindon Works, developing a display and talks and creating family activities for school holidays.
We asked them as part of Creativity and Wellbeing Week, what impact the project has had on their wellbeing.
"It brings people together, we talk and share and work with each other; it is a place we can share openly and now we know each other, we talk outside. It is a welcoming place. Before I came here my mental health was not good. Being part of volunteering at STEAM Museum helps me to cool down, it is not a big impact on your nervous system. When I come here, it’s good to calm down and not do things to the maximum, I’ve slowed down, it cultivates reflection. It has developed strong communication, I enjoy working with others, getting to know new people and using my time effectively."

Creativity and Wellbeing Week highlights the growing recognition of Museums using objects, spaces and practices to support healthy outcomes in their communities.
Multaka Swindon is facilitated by our Community Engagement Officer and supported by a Live Well Project Officer.

It’s FA Cup Final day! Good luck to both teams today. Back in January 1938 Swindon Town took on Grimsby Town in a FA Cup 3rd round replay. This notice from the time was put up at the Carriage and Wagon Works. A large majority of men from the Works will have wanted to go and see the game which took place on a Wednesday afternoon. The notice appears to suggest that men worked an extra hour on Tuesday and Thursday (the normal finish time was 4.30pm) in order to get off work earlier on the Wednesday to catch the game.

Swindon won the match 2-1, but went on to lose in the 4th round to Luton.
