Curator Talk: John Piper in the South West

On 26th September we’re marking the final day of the exhibition ‘John Piper in the South Country’ at Museum & Art Swindon, which features ‘Bolingbroke at Lydiard Tregoze’ (from the collection at Lydiard House Museum), with a fabulous talk from David Dawson, Director at Wiltshire Museum.
In a sit-down talk, David will explore how Piper (1903-92) responded to the landscape and architecture of the south-west of England, including Devizes, his favourite market town. The talk demonstrates the diversity of the inspiration he found in the landscapes of Wiltshire and Dorset, with works never before displayed in the area illustrating a wide range of subjects from the neolithic monuments of Avebury and Salisbury Plain, to the 18th century gardens of Stourhead, the grandeur of Lydiard Tregoze and the Jurassic profile of the Isle of Portland.
There is no better way to celebrate this successful exhibition, which toured first to Wiltshire Museum and then Museum & Art Swindon, than to hear David’s talk and then explore the artworks on display.
