Museum of Computing

Museum of Computing The museum is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to the history of computing and digital development, run entirely by volunteers.
Started in 2003 by Jeremy Holt and Simon Webb, it was the first physical museum of its kind in the UK dedicated to the history of computing. The museum started life at the University of Bath in Swindon with one room and nothing to display! Since then it has moved to Swindon Town Centre and has over 5,000 objects in its collection.

The Museum is not simply a repository of artefacts, but has active displays as well as providing a forum for the provision of lectures. There is a mixture of permanent and temporary displays, many exhibits of which have been loaned by companies and other collectors. It runs exhibitions and events and has strong educational activities including a childrens' computer club and welcomes school visits.

Mission: To educate and entertain visitors on the history of computer technology.

A massive thank you to the team of volunteers from Nationwide Building Society who spent their day helping to spruce up the museum! A fabulous bunch who cleaned, scrubbed, painted and repaired, even the Sinclair C5 was treated to a clean! And not content with donating their time, they also presented us with a cheque for £70!

Also many thanks to Jet Rod who came and pressure washed the outside of the museum, it is now sparkling! Thank you all!

Family-friendly all ages welcome

You will find many hands-on exhibits, allowing you to have a go and experience computers and other items as they were in the past.

January 26, 1997 - Over ten years again we were already debating the fact electronics taking over paper books! Lots of articles over the years have spoken about the avancement in technology at its impact.

Critics complained that the library sacrificed too much book space for computer terminals and too many books for online information, lamenting as well the end of the traditional card catalogue that has marked a move to the information age for many libraries.

Sad to announce that we've had a burglary at the museum. On top of this, we have a shortage of volunteers and so we will not be opening on Fridays until further notice.

We will however continue to open on Saturdays from 10:00-16:00 and hope to reopen on Fridays as soon as possible.

So please support us and come and see us on a Saturday!

This weeks fun fact quiz |The First Commercial Telegraph was sent around in August 1911

The New York Times sends a telegram message to test how fast a commercial message could be sent around the world. Reading simply, “This message sent around the world”, it left at 7 PM, traveled over 28,000 miles and was relayed by 16 different operators. It arrived back at The Times only 16.5 minutes later.
The building where the message originated is now called One Times Square and is best known for where the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

What was the first telegraph message sent?

In 1981 Xerox introduces the Xerox 8010 Star Information System, the first commercial system utilising a computer mouse. The 8010 was geared towards business and was not a commercial success, therefore the mouse remained in relative obscurity until the Apple Lisa. More prominently the Apple Macintosh, brought the mouse into the mainstream.
