Museum of Computing

Museum of Computing The museum is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to the history of computing and digital development, run entirely by volunteers.
Started in 2003 by Jeremy Holt and Simon Webb, it was the first physical museum of its kind in the UK dedicated to the history of computing. The museum started life at the University of Bath in Swindon with one room and nothing to display! Since then it has moved to Swindon Town Centre and has over 5,000 objects in its collection.
(41)

The Museum is not simply a repository of artefacts, but has active displays as well as providing a forum for the provision of lectures. There is a mixture of permanent and temporary displays, many exhibits of which have been loaned by companies and other collectors. It runs exhibitions and events and has strong educational activities including a childrens' computer club and welcomes school visits.

Mission: To educate and entertain visitors on the history of computer technology.

The BBC micro:bit is a tiny computer complete with LED display, buttons, accelerometer, Bluetooth and compass. It's programmed on your PC and the program can then be downloaded to the micro:bit via a USB cable. It's about £12 if you want to buy one but you can still program it and run it on the built in emulator here. We've just bought a tiny robot that the micro:bit plugs into and controls, at the moment it is chasing my cats around the house!

Scratch - Imagine, Program, Share

Scratch is so cool, it's a brilliant way of getting kids coding and it's completely free. You can set up your own account, share your creations with others and see what other people are creating. It's online but you can also download an offline version.

The museum is open today after our Christmas break. Big thanks to our volunteers who helped to clear up after a water leak in the gallery, it was a good excuse to tidy up a bit!

We're open every Saturday from 9:30 until 4 and we are rated number #1 of things to do in Swindon, do come and see us!

Unfortunately due to a water leak in the gallery, the museum will be closed to the general public tomorrow. We will however still run the children's club.

The museum will be open again on Sat Jan 4th. From all the volunteers at the museum, we'd like to wish all our visitors and supporters a Very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

1st Chiseldon Air Scouts visited this week, what a fantastic group! Great fun was had in the classroom writing a Space Invaders game followed by some hands-on time in the gallery. The typewriter is always popular as is 'Duck Hunt' on the classic Nintendo Entertainment System.

If you are interesting in arranging a group visit, daytime or evening, please email [email protected]

A massive thank you to Nationwide Building Society for their very generous donation today. This is to pay for replacement Android tablets that we use in the classroom to teach App programming. The original tablets were stolen last year and it left us unable to run these programming sessions. Thanks to Nationwide Building Society, this will now be back for schools and other groups to enjoy.

I'm doing Inktober this year, where I have to draw a picture to a prompt every day. This was my attempt for day 28 - 'Ride'.
For the Dekatron fans in the group -
The first ever laptop? I wonder if you have one in the museum's collection? =).
Huge thanks to a team from Nationwide who came in today and completed an inventory of the entire gallery and gallery storage.
Another screenshot of this game's machine in the sweeney Series 1 in 1974.
Spotted this on the sweeney the other day, a early version of Ping.
