We are very excited that the inaugural meeting of Bramall Hall Book Club is this evening! We are still accepting members - although unless you are a very fast reader, you may not make tonight's session! Our next book is Tracy Chevalier's 'The Falling Angels' and then we are reading 'Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follett (which is a big one, be warned!). Membership also gets you an annual pass to all our museums and 10% off in our shops. https://www.stockport.gov.uk/events/bramall-hall-book-club-museum-late-june?date=2019-06-25

The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Walter Brett has officially unveiled the beautiful new Sundial that has been reinstated in front of Bramall Hall and officially opened the Victorian Rock Garden.

Both of these wonderful projects have been made possible by the tireless support and hard work of the Friends of Bramall Hall and Park.

The Victorian Rock Garden project was realised with funding gratefully received from the Heritage Fund and Tesco along with support from Notcutts Garden Centre.

We would like express a huge thank you to all involved for helping us to conserve the historic environment at Bramall Hall.

We were proud to welcome the Mayor of Stockport, Walt Brett, to Bramhall Park yesterday where he unveiled the new sundial and officially opened the Victorian Rock Garden. The weather was perfect and a goodly number of Friends came along to greet the Mayor. I have a sneaking feeling he enjoyed himself!

There is just over a week until the first session of the Bramall Hall Book Club. Our first book is 'The King's Witch' by Tracy Borman and we are going to try to cover a wide range of historical periods with subsequent books, as well as reading books that might just be loosely described as 'historical fiction'. We have chosen the nest two month's books, but after that group members will choose. So, in June we will read 'Falling Angels' by Tracy Chevalier and in July 'The Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follet (which has a whopping 806 pages so we are giving you plenty of warning!). Don't forget that book club membership gets you an annual pass to Stockport's museums and 10% off in all of our shops (including on books). https://www.stockport.gov.uk/events/bramall-hall-book-club?date=2019-05-21

We are simply delighted to to see a Sundial re-instated at Bramall Hall.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Bramall Hall & Park for funding this project and to the stonemason, Ruairi Sweeney from R15 Stone Art for this beautiful piece of work.

Just look what we've got! After an absence of 80 years Bramall Hall has a sundial. The stone has come from a quarry owned by a descendant of the Hall's Davenport family. We do like our history!
It still lacks one ingredient - the sun!
Pictures courtesy of Linn and Sheila - many thanks!

#OnThisDay in 1696, William Davenport VII died. Of all the members of the Davenport family who were buried in the Davenport chapel in Stockport, he is the only one on record to have a stone laid for him. Laid by his daughter, the stone read ‘Here lyeth the body of William Davenport of Bromhall, Esquire, who dyed May the 25. 1696.’ https://www.stockport.gov.uk/topic/bramall-hall

What’s not to like? Fresh air, good company, free coffee and you would be helping our fabulous Friends Group keep the grounds around the Hall looking wonderful. Thank you!!

We are doing a bit of weeding tomorrow (Saturday) in the Rock Garden. It's not our regular fortnightly session so there will be fewer regulars to help. If you fancy some gentle exercise in lovely surroundings with good company, come along to the Park. We start at 10am by the stocks and finish at noon, but "guests" can be entirely flexible in their timing.
Tools are provided but wear gardening shoes and gloves.
Free parking and hot drink as always!

The brand new Bramall Book Club kicks off next month! Each month we will look at a different work of historical fiction and we are starting off with The King's Witch by Tracy Borman. Membership is a one off fee of £25 (£20 concessions), for which you will also get an annual pass to Stockport Museums and 20% off in all our shops - including on books. The club will meet in the atmospheric Victorian kitchen, with the occasional foray to another room, should the book we are reading take us there, and there will be refreshments available. https://www.stockport.gov.uk/events/bramall-hall-book-club?date=2019-05-21

#OnThisDay in 1936, Bramall Hall was opened to the public for the first time.

‘In generations to come, this will be known as the day when Bramall Hall was saved.’ So said Brigadier-General Sir William Bromley-Davenport, head of the Davenport family. After it was purchased by Hazel Grove & Bramhall Urban District Council, at the formal opening, Sir William Bromley-Davenport said ‘For this house is one of the treasures of England.’ https://www.stockport.gov.uk/topic/bramall-hall

#ThrowbackThursday to Charles Nevill fishing in the pond.

Charles Nevill married Mary Jane Booth in 1878. Early in their married life Mary came to terms with the fact she couldn't share her husband's passion of fishing. Writing to a friend of a fishing holiday in 1879 she said, "Never be induced to marry a man who is fond of fishing, for if you do you will wish you had never been born."

Years later, Charles built the artificial lakes and stocked them with trout so he could fish to his heart's content! https://www.stockport.gov.uk/topic/bramall-hall
