🎨 THANK YOU, STOCKPORT! 🎨
Our third Junior Art Competition is a wrap, and what a summer we have had at UnderBanks Gallery! The submissions were all excellent and caused our judges and Haus plenty of deliberation. 🖼️ The exhibition was just a delight!!

📚 BOOK OF THE MONTH: Lowry's Lamps by Richard Mayson. See the Lowry in the Lamps.

L.S. Lowry is known the world over for his crowds and his industrial scenes — but this book shines a light (pun very much intended) on something easy to walk past: his lamp-posts, telegraph poles, flag poles and street furniture. Mayson, who has a life-long passion for street lamps, takes some of Lowry's best-loved paintings and shows how these humble details shaped his composition, perspective and colour. Lamp-posts started as background texture in his busy industrial scenes — but as his work evolved, they became a subject all of their own, often the quiet focus of his later, more solitary paintings.

Mayson grew up in Lowry's home village of Mottram-in-Longdendale, so this isn't a detached academic study — it's written with real affection for the same streets Lowry painted. The book traces how Lowry's treatment of street furniture evolved against the real Salford and Manchester streetscapes from 1916 through to the 1970s, and includes previously unseen paintings from private collections, published here for the first time.

Our favourite line in the whole book — Lowry's own advice to a young artist asking how to make it: "no need to go to London to become a famous painter. You won't find better lamp-posts there." 🖤

OUR TAKE 🏮 This one felt made for us. We're sat right in the middle of Stockport's historical market place, and Lowry is honestly one of the artists who's inspired this gallery the most in recent years. Step outside our door and there's a lamp standing sentinel over the Underbanks Gallery — the same kind of lamp you'll spot again and again in Lowry's work. Look past it into the hustle and bustle of the market place and you start noticing his characters everywhere: the hurried figures, the huddles, the solitary passers-by. His industrial eye is stitched into this town — you just have to know where to look, and this book teaches you exactly how.
