🎨Artworks can inspire music 🎶
‘Broken’ a sculpture by Manchester Academy of Fine Arts member, Lorna Green, currently on display in the 'Artful Remembrance' exhibition, demonstrates the broken world we live in now.

Lorna tells us more about the artwork and her upcoming musical performance,

"'Broken' 2026, has music composed by Julia Harding and consists of a broken cello, violin, trumpet, cornet and flute, and recognises the importance of making and composing of music in war time.

At this moment in time, there are many wars around the world - maybe new music will emerge from them?

"Broken" premiered on 28th June 2026 in Christ Church, Macclesfield, Cheshire, with Macclesfield Contemporary Ensemble."

Lorna and a group of musicians from the Macclesfield Music Society, will perform ‘Broken’ in the Upper Gallery on

Sun 27th Sept at 2pm.

The performance lasts approx 20 mins.

We know how much you like to learn about our artists and their artworks, so we asked a few of our Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) artists to tell us more about their work in the 'Artful Remembrance' show.

Today we feature the work from Stockport Artist, Angela Herd Hall, who is the president of Stockport Art Guild.

Angela tells us more about her artworks on display in MAFA's Autumn show,

"Being a figurative painter, I like to create paintings with a narrative.
Receiving a letter with sad news, stirring long forgotten memories.

Home schooling during Covid. Children and parents had new roles to take on. Perhaps we erase memories of a difficult time.

Reading the paper... delivered daily to our homes seems a long time ago when print was king. The crossword was my Father's relaxation. How I miss him.

Saying Goodbye to Elke... my dear German friend who loved to go shopping. Hopefully she is continuing in Heaven."

We agree Angela, Remembrance can take many forms. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with us.

Last Saturday saw the opening of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) Autumn Exhibition - Artful Remembrance. The Gallery Team welcomed our MAFA artists for their preview which was officially opened by MAFA President, Janina Cebertowicz, and Stockport MP, Navendu Mishra.

Artful Remembrance is a stunning display of work from MAFA members which shouldn't be missed. The show includes a striking portrait of our now Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, when he was Mayor of Manchester.

Good Afternoon! We are really looking forward to the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts Artist preview tomorrow from 1pm, but we do have news to share with you.

Have you always wanted to give painting a try? Why not sign up to the Painting Foundations Course here at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery for a 5 week introductory course starting Thursday 24th Sept at 2pm, focussing on water-based media, brought to you by Stockport College Adult Education.

You will develop key skills in colour mixing, composition, mark making, colour values, and the use of different painting surfaces and mediums.

Complete a new project each week and gain ideas for further practice between sessions.

Delivered by experienced Stockport Open Exhibition artist, Nancy Collantine.

Heritage Open Days is back in 2026 from 11th - 20th September! Stockport has a lot for you to see including a fabulous 'Stockport Stroll' starting at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery!

Steve Marland will be leading a Stockport Stroll with a one hour walk starting at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery taking in several of the town's exceptional architectural site including Stopford House, the Hat Works Museum and Alan Boyson's Merseyway Shopping Centre car park screen. We will finish the walk at Stockroom Stockport where you can view the Marvel from Marple exhibition, view Boyson's work and learn more about Stockport and Merseyway's history.

This is collaboration between Stockroom, Stockport War Memorial Gallery and the Hat Works as part of the Heritage Open Weekend and as part of programme of events & activities surrounding The Marvel from Marple Exhibition. See all The Marvel from Marple activities here.

The Marvel from Marple is funded by the Henry Moore Foundation and Stockroom, and developed in partnership with Stockport Council and Sheffield Hallam University.
