Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery has a long history of exhibitions from some of the artworld's finest artists. Today the gallery boasts an extensive exhibition program, which now gives emerging artists a chance to showcase their work. This next painting, which is Oil on canvas board, brings us so much joy, just as it says in the title 'Pride and Joy' by Artist Lynn Bridgen.

Lynn shares with us,

"A little boy dances at his first Pride, where he celebrates his love for his family and his two mummies. The painting also reflects the pride and joy in him and his family, felt by the artist."

We are always learning and especially through the Stockport Open Exhibition! This large scale painting by Artist David Taylor-Curran depicts, as the title says, 'The Last Annesley Pit Pony'.

David shares what his artwork represents,

"From the mid 18th until the mid 20th century the Annesley Bentinck colliery was home to working ‘pit ponies’.
The ponies spent most of their lives in hot, dark and dusty conditions. They often suffered from a much shorter lifespan due to chronic pain, respiratory problems and loss of vision.

After the colliery closed, for surviving ponies the sweet grass and fresh air above ground is scant reward for the progress and importance the ponies played in both industrial and human progress."

There are so many ways to be creative and people turn to using digital tech for many different reasons. Artist Paul Frankland shares with us how he was inspired to give digital art a go.

Paul says,

"I no longer paint in the traditional way following hand surgery, for the last few years all my paintings have been digital, I bought my first tablet after seeing the late David Hockney explaining why he had turned to digital painting and I was impressed with what he produced.

My painting is titled ‘A view after a long walk’ I’d spent the whole morning photographing interesting subjects to paint in the market area, of which there are lots, the last shot I took was in Underbank and had followed a shower, whilst taking shelter, I looked down Underbank towards The White Lion and thought the view would make an ideal subject."

We're staying on the theme of Marple, as it's truely a great part of Stockport to capture on paper, on canvas and on your camera!
This next artwork 'Canalsides, Marple (Diptych)' by Artist, Caz Latham, shows us the 'ordinary' side of Marple.

Caz tells us what inspires her,

"I'm consistently inspired by ordinary urban places - especially if there's are signs of the changes people have made to it over time, nature reclaiming the space, or bright colour where you wouldn't necessarily expect it.

Much of Marple where I live is far too pretty for my art references, but these two little scenes along the Lock Flight were an exception and really grabbed me. Just a 2 minute walk from one-another, they are a perfect pair.

I love the contrast between the stones and bricks, the little plants stubbornly growing, and the worn out old bin/planter thing for its honest and practical urban decay, plus the date on it is a bonus.

I've painted this diptych in my favourite medium of acrylics on mixed media paper."

We love this honest piece of social history Caz.

Painting and creating can help us explore our faith in our own personal worlds and the world around us, as a whole.

Arist Steve Ogley shares a personal account of how he created his painting 'ALL PAINTS'.

Steve tells us,

"ALL PAINTS! is a landscape of All Saints Church in Marple, I have a close connection to the church, so it seemed fitting to use it in my latest painting. Being colourblind, I like to flip which colours I use to give the viewer a brief taste of the world through my eyes.

The brooding sky colour mirrors the current dark sense of foreboding encapsulating the world, only our faith in humanity will ensure our survival through turbulent times."

Many artists are proficient in a few mediums and this artwork from Artist, Morag Quilliam, ‘A Stitch in Time’ brings together two mediums that she has enjoyed working with.

Morag shares,

"For many years before I started painting I worked using textile as the medium.

This piece of work is a painting in acrylic on board in which I use the imagery of stitch but worked in paint and pencil.

The title [A Stitch in Time] reflects the tongue-in-cheek reference to the combination of the two ways of working."

We get a real feeling of texture from this piece Morag!

Our Stockport Open Exhibition Artists are so creative, they really are able to transpose their thoughts and visions onto canvas. One painting that may have caught your eye in the West Gallery is 'Wild and Free’ by Artist, Jen Samani. Jen loves nature and wanted to share her process with us.

Jen says,

"I take photos of flowers and nature everywhere I go on my phone. Any flowers that make me feel joyful get saved. I always choose to paint from images where the flowers look a little wild and unruly.

I paint on all shaped canvases and board but I love to paint on circular canvases. I imagine that this small snippet of the world is under a magnifying glass. When I feel like my paintings are finished I like to cover them in a shiny resin to encapsulate the moment in time."

Have you heard of the term 'Fauvism' in art? Fauvism was an avant-garde art movement that started in France around 1905. It was the style of les Fauves (the wild beasts), a group of modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong color over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism.

We're sharing this with you because if you've been to see the Stockport Open Exhibition won't have missed Eight Trees Hiding by Artist, Graham Foster!

Graham tells us about his painting,

"My style is Ultra Modern Fauvism. I used oils which I apply with an 1 inch long palette knife.

People are encouraged to touch the piece, because if they are magnetised towards the imagery then it's only natural for them to touch."

Visitors really enjoyed Graham's large scale painting, it was a real show stopper!

Can you paint emotions? Have you ever created something to get you through a moment of sadness, worry, stress. Maybe you wanted to express joy or love.

Artist Rebecca Field shares her thoughts on her artwork "Shame".

"This painting captures the depth of shame. It wasn’t composed; it was felt. The contrast of deep colours and sharp gold represents the two elements that shone through a very dark period: my sovereign gifts of coaching and creativity."

This painting has been another popuar piece and one that got our visitors talking. We hung 'Shame' horizontally with permision by Rebecca, but her artwork was created to be hung vertically. We hope you get a sense of how that looks from the photos below.
