Our Story
Grade 2* listed building.
Staircase House offers a unique glimpse into the life of mediæval and renaissance Stockport, the origins of the town, its status as a borough and a market town, and the subsequent stages of the House's development until the 1940s, when it was last used as a private dwelling.
Also on the same site is Stockport's Museum.

NEW POST! 🥰 Continuing with my recent theme of UK-based ideas of what to get up to locally this year, here are my tips for things to do in Stockport. Good old Stockport is local to me and it's where I do a lot of my eating, drinking and shopping, so I know it pretty well.
If you’ve not heard of it before, Stockport is a historic market town just south of Manchester, England. In the 18th/19th centuries, it was a big deal in the region’s textile production and grew to be the capital of the UK’s hat-making industry. There’s even a hat museum there! 🎩🧢👒
Today, Stockport is often overshadowed by the popular city of Manchester being so close to it. But Stockport has seen a lot of regeneration lately. Every time I go in, there’s something new and interesting popping up. And it actually has some brilliant stuff going on, from excellent craft beer bars 🍻 to gorgeous and unusual shops as well as a brilliant market 🛍️ and a great foodie scene.🍕 Unfortunately, it also has a fairly run-down shopping area and a generic chain restaurant/cinema complex, so this can give a negative first impression. You have to dig a little further (or get some tips from a local blogger…😉) to find all the lovely hidden gems around the old town and historic market area. If you know where to go, you’ll see a much nicer and different side to it.
Anyway, if you fancy a visit, I've listed some of my favourite things to do, see, and (of course) eat and drink there. Please give it a share if you enjoy the post! And as ever, I'm tagging anything mentioned below.
In conjunction with Stockport Museums and Creative Manchester we are running a series of making events at Staircase House. They start in mid January and this is a link to the first of the five.
Celebrate with us and 7 of Greater Manchester's top heritage sites, including the beautiful Elizabeth Gaskell's House and the fascinating Staircase House and Stockport Museum:

Joy Division on The Streets of Stockport: Photographer Paul Slattery reports on a recent presentation about his iconic 1979 photo session and Strawberry Studios Exhibition.
Hello everyone. I had never heard of Staircase House untill this morning. I am a volunteer at 'Saint Nicolas Place' Kings Norton. I was there and I got talking to a man who was telling me about the building. I was interested so I have looked the building up. I hope you don't mind but I am going to share a picture on my page, to give you a bit of publicity.
Was fortunate to be able to attend this year's Heritage Open Day, on Saturday 9th September, and had an absolute fantastic day, despite the rain showers. Definitely looking forward to next year's.
We are DDR Manchester, Definitely Different Radio. We produce speech and music podcasts and are particularly interested in Strawberry Studios and are looking forward to visiting the rebuild of the studio which we will be attending on Saturday.
Back in 2010, we had the pleasure of interviewing co-founder Peter Tattersall and Strawberry historian Dr Peter Wadsworth.
In 2013, we met up with Peter & Peter with former employee, Pauline Renshaw for an interview at Rubber Soul Recording Studios, Hallam Mill, Stockport for a chat and to explore the possibility of recording some tribute songs.
Pauline set about recruiting singers and musicians all of whom have recorded at Strawberry many times. They included Paul Burgess on drums (10cc). Toni Baker on keyboards (The Dakotas). Brian John Lewis, Lead Guitar (who has backed Cliff Richard amongst others) and Lee Renshaw on lead vocals and guitars. Danny Walsh, bass guitar and James Collins, acoustic guitar. Backing vocals include Ronnie Ravey (The Dakotas) Pete Maclaine, Lee Renshaw, Alison Renshaw, Toni Baker and more.
The result was two great songs recorded by the above-mentioned in Rubber Soul Studios Stockport. The producers Peter Tattersall (founder and sound engineer of great esteem) ,Matt Millward at Rubber Soul studios who kindly supplied free use of recording studio and facilities, and Lee Renshaw. Brian Whitelegge kindly suppliedvideo footage and stills of the recording session.
The first one was written by local musicians Lee and Frank Renshaw. "Glory Glory Man United" was recorded in the studio 30 years ago, and the lyrics were changed for this version as a tribute to Strawberry.

The second song "Strawberry Rainbows" was written by Lee Renshaw and can be viewed at

We are also celebrating this very special Strawberry Studios Heritage weekend by releasing some special podcasts which can be accessed via

We are very much looking forward to sharing in the celebrations!
