The Class 502 Preservation Trust are sad to hear about the recent passing of Graham Harris, a railway preservationist, without whom the 502 would not be here.

When plans for Hall Road depot fell through just a few weeks before we were due to take delivery of the unit, Graham helped us find not only storage at Tebay but also the very track onto which it sat.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

A big thank you to all that visited the Class 502 at the West Lancs Classic bus Running Day on Sunday. It was good to hear your memories of the old trains and kind words on the restoration. Here's to next year.

A quick glimpse of what to expect at Sundays West lancs classic bus running day where the 502 will be open to the public!

This Sunday (12th July 2026) sees the West Lancs Classic Bus Running day, and the opportunity to view the substantial progress on the preserved class 502 ex Merseyrail train.

There will be buses running from our base off Tollgate Road around 10.30 heading out into the West Lancashire Countryside and a few Mystery Tours. Our shed will be open during this time to allow people to view the ongoing bus restorations plus the Class 502 train will also be open to view.

THERE IS NO PARKING ON OUR SITE and as a result there is a bus every half hour from Ormskirk Bus Station from 10.36 and a bus from Burscough Bridge Station to link in with the trains.

On 12th July 2026 the Merseyside Transport Trust will be holding its annual open door event at Burscough. The West Lancashire Classic Bus Running Day will be centred on the MTT’s base in Burscough. There will be a chance to see the MTT’s collection along with the Class 502 which will be open to view.

This is your opportunity to visit your 502 Unit and see just how much progress has been made lately. Trailer coach ceiling panels are in place, internal lighting is fitted and operative. Work on Motor Coach has continued. The part of the refurbished bodywork that is complete is being outshopped in blue.

As always our activities are a continuous work in progress which is funded in large part by your generous support and donations for which thank you.

It is best to travel from Burscough centre (adjacent to Hop Vine) using one of the MTT provided bus routes. A regular shuttle bus service will also run from Ormskirk bus station. There is no parking at the event itself.

Remember this Saturday is the the Wirral history & heritage fair. Entry is FREE ! So come along, and enjoy a wide variety of history and heritage groups. We will be there too, catch up with the restoration of the LMS class 502 unit, & get your copy of our Crossens electrics book.

Our stalls next outing will be at The Wirral History & Heritage fair. This is a fantastic fair for all with a interest in our local history & Heritage. We will have our Crossens electrics book for sale, we only have a few left now so pick up your copy while stock lasts.

Our stall is now open at the Rainhill model railway exhibition. There's a free bus service from Rainhill to the exhibition too.
