On Friday, a special event was held to mark 112 years since the Battle of Mons and commemorate the twinning of Mons and Sefton in 1964.

The day began with a service at Southport War Memorial, led by Reverend Ben Dyer, and attended by veterans and representatives from Mons and Sefton, including Royal British Legion groups from across the borough. Four ‘Angels of Mons’ also travelled from Belgium to take part in the ceremony.

Wreaths were laid at the memorial, where the names of those who died in Mons are inscribed, by dignitaries including Merseyside Lord Lieutenant Peter Oliver OBE, Southport MP Patrick Hurley, Bootle MP Peter Dowd, Mayor of Sefton Cllr Jen Corcoran, Catherine Houdart, Deputy Mayor of Mons, Colonel Joris Van Belle, Belgian Defence Attaché and Major Carl Gardner, Commandant of Altcar Training Camp.

Following the service, guests were invited to a reception at The Atkinson, where they had the opportunity to explore the current Angels of Mons exhibition. The exhibition, presented in partnership with Mons Memorial Museum, explores the legend of a miraculous vision said to have appeared to British troops during the Battle of Mons in 1914.
