Museum of Abernethy We have a wide range of exhibits covering aspects of local life and history.

The volunteer run Museum of Abernethy lies on the site of an eleventh-century Culdees monastery, close to one of only two eleventh-century round towers in Scotland. The Museum of Abernethy is entirely volunteer run; entry is FREE but donations are gratefully accepted! We have a range of exhibits covering different aspects of local life through the centuries, from the 3,000 year old logboat recover

ed in 2007 to daily life in more modern times - there's a lot to learn about the local area! We're keen to hear all your stories about life in Abernethy - from going to the shops to going to the berries, we'd love to know about it! If you'd be interested in talking to us about your life in Auld Abernethy, drop us a line at [email protected] and we can arrange to come and have a chat. Enquiries about local history are also welcomed - please do bear in mind that we're all volunteers so it might take a day or two to get back to you, but we'll always reply! Keep an eye out in the new year for info on events taking place in the museum - we look forward to seeing you all when we re-open next spring.

We've been hearing from a couple of visitors over the last few weeks that there's a website out there that's got our opening hours wrong - THE AUDACITY! Try as we might, we can't figure out which one - all the sites we can think of have it right (Wednesday to Sunday, 1-4pm). Folks, if any of you come across a site that says we're open later than that or on different days, could you give us a shout so we can get it sorted? It's annoying for us, but more so for folks that travel a distance only to find that we're shut!

Something a wee bit different for this week's (yes, we've finally run out of auld school photos!). Now, we know none of you were alive in 1748 (although it can feel like it on a Monday, eh?) - but who can tell us what this is and what it was used for? As always, full bragging rights for the week to the first person with the correct answer!

Something a wee bit different for this week\s (well, not that different obviously, it's still a picture of our after all). Our intrepid trustee Tink found this postcard at a recent book fair - and we think it's pretty rare. The original photo (which we've shared with you before) is from the late 19th / early 20th century and is black and white, as was much more common then. We've never seen a colourised version before, and we think it's pretty special!

Note: now edited to get the dates right, cheers to David for catching that particular howler!

This week's takes us all the way back to... 1946! The WRI were in a day oot in Dunfermline - and having a right old sing song while they were there by the looks of things. We do have some names for the ladies, but we'd love to know if you recognise anyone. Because we're nosey like that 😅

We're also still on the look out for pics for the Memory Lane slot. If you've some corkers from the school, the WRI, the Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Gala - anything really! You don't have to leave your treasured photos with us, either - drop us a wee message if you can help and we'll arrange to get them scanned and give them straight back!

If you've got a photo of a wee corner of Abernethy from a weird angle or where the view has changed a lot, we'd love to hear from you. We're quickly running out of mystery photos for the Wednesday slot - you don't even have to give us the actual pic, we'll happily scan it for you and give it back! Drop us a wee message if you can help!

I can't take the excitement any more, so here's your clue: think carefully about who puts up these posts... at least a couple of you may have stood on the exact spot this was taken!
EDITED TO ADD: congratulations to Jane Sanderson who just guessed correctly in the post before this one!

Right then, devotees!
