Women in the Viking Age held considerable power, yet are often portrayed as passive figures rather than leaders. In this talk, Shanna Bryman explores how male-centred interpretations of medieval texts and archaeology have obscured women's roles, and argues that new approaches to written and burial evidence reveal the need to reassess women's leadership in Viking Age society.

These leather shoes from the late 12th or early 13th century have revealing bulges made by bunions. Bunions result from the big toe being pushed sideways by joint swelling. This, in turn, created a bulge in the wearer's leather shoe. Sometimes the sole was so distorted that a hole formed.
