In 1881 William James Holmes returned from Scotland (his father having married the daughter of Sir Charles Flower). His son William Charles Flower Homes took over the estate in 1908 and built a generator and produced the first electricity in Strumpshaw. The family traditions still live on in the museum, a place where the past can be seen in all the steam engines and the farm machinery that helped

shape our future. Bring a picnic lunch, sit in the paddock on a Summer's day and just enjoy the view. Open: Sunday 2nd April - Sunday 1st October 2017
Open at 10.30am. Sundays & Bank Holidays only.

Thursford are extremely delighted to announce that we have an exciting project taking place..... the restoration of Victory back into steam, one of the most famous showman's engines in the world.

Victory is currently being returned to steam after many years dormant. The process began with a strip down and thorough boiler inspection. With that done and the full scope of works agreed, repairs to the boiler have now started (replacement stays and rivets, a new set of tubes). All steam fittings will be thoroughly overhauled. The repaired boiler will be hydraulically tested to 1.5x working pressure and certificated for use. Attention will then turn to mechanical aspects and the main dynamo (mounted on the front and used to power the canopy lights), a new set of front tyres will also be fitted.

Victory was the 1st of its kind to be designed and built by Burrells of Thetford, these were known as the Special scenic engines and on the back of Victory, 21 other engines were built but only 12 have survived into preservation. This is a significant milestone not only in the steam world but beyond. Out of all the scenics that have survived, all have been in steam at public events over the years, but to most people in the preservation world none have ever seen Victory outside let alone in steam. With Victory being returned to steam after nearly 40 years sitting dormant this is a very exciting new chapter not only for the Thursford Collection but also for the Cushing family.

Victory is currently at Craftmaster Restorations and will be in steam at the Royal Norfolk show and Thursford Gala day 2nd July 2023.

Chris Spinks 1947- 2022

It is with great sadness that we have lost a great volunteer Chris Spinks. 74 year old Chris Spinks passed away, on Wednesday 4th May 2022, at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital, surrounded by his family.

Chris was a local chap, with a very dry sense of humour and a generous nature. A practical man who would help anybody.

Chris came to the museum in the late 1990s and spent the majority of his time looking after and driving the Showman Seam engine, before any event he would be joined by his wife Gloria to get the engine ready for display and it was always well turned out.

He enjoyed driving the Showman Steam Engine on its 100 birthday. He was a valued volunteer who will be sadly missed.

He is survived by Gloria, his beloved wife of 48 years, his two daughters, Marie and Debbie, and his grandchildren.

Chris’ funeral will be open for everyone who knew him to attend and dates and times will be shared when the details have been finalised.

They are all back,
Young and old,
The task is enormous,
But excitement is very much there.

Fresh air is now filling the museum,
And the musty smell is slowing disappearing.

A minor job,
Turns out to be a major work,
But the guys can handle it,
And progress will come,
Each little step, day by day.

But most of all,
We're so pleased to be back.

Keep healthy and keep active,
And we hope to see you soon.

With the end of the lockdown in sight it’s time to bring everybody up to date on where we currently stand and the hope of future events.

Campsite -------

The campsite will reopen on the 12th of April and is available for bookings, please see our website for contact information. There are no facilities available and all campers must be self-sufficient. Payments in cash only.

Museum -------

Kiki and I would like to get the museum open as early as we can to support upcoming events. We will keep you updated on the date we can reopen.

Events: -------

The Steam Rally has been cancelled for 2021.

The Classic Car event has been postponed for the moment with the hope of staging the event in late August or early September.

The Tree Fair has been moved to the weekend of the 14th August, again depending on the restrictions been lifted.

The Fab Fest has been cancelled for 2021.

The Autumn Rally hasn't been cancelled yet in the hope that we may be able to have some sort of event in September.

The model day may present its own problems due to the tightness of the stalls and the layout of the museum. We will update you when we have more information and guidance.

-------

That's all. Thanks for reading.

Steam Team.

Hello all,

It is with a heavy heart that we are sadly having to announce that the Strumpshaw Steam Rally 2020 is cancelled.

We have taken this decision following Government advice concerning COVID-19. As sad as we are to not be going ahead with the event this year, the welfare and safety of our volunteers and visitors is of paramount importance.

Regarding other events planned throughout the year, we would also like to announce the following:

The Easter Sunday Egg Hunt, Sunday 12th April has been cancelled.

The Norwich Classic Vehicle Club, Sunday May 31st has been cancelled.

The Steam Museum and museum campsite will be closed until further notice.

Strumpshaw Tree Fair, 18th 19 July - being monitored.

VW Fab Fest, 29th 30th August - being monitored.

The Autumn Event, 5th and 6th September - being monitored.

Model and Miniature Show, 26th September - being monitored.

Thanks for your understanding during these difficult times and we will come back bigger and better!

On behalf of the Rally and Museum,

TeamSteam. 🚂

Strumpshaw steam museum and the corona virus
Due to the restrictions imposed on the museum by the corona virus we are unsure of what will happen this year. We have cancelled the May Steam Rally and the Fab Fest has also been cancelled. The remainder of the events are still waiting for to see the level of restrictions that will apply after May. It is the intention to ready the museum and the campsite to open when we can and to support any of the events that might take place.
Any changes will be notified on line as and when they happen.

Our Fundraising and Campaigns Manager, Alex Haswell, visited the volunteers at Strumpshaw Steam Museum to thank them for their generous donation of £500.

The Museum has one of the largest private collections of steam engines in the UK and is steeped in history, going back generations to Wesley Key, who started the collection in the 1950s which was then expanded by his son Jimmy and grandson William.

Tom Laird, who manages the museum, said "Our events in 2019 have had an emphasis on mental health and we like to work with local charities. The museum is run and maintained by a fantastic team of volunteers and we are delighted to be able to give something back to a cause which means a lot to us."
