Library After Hours

Join us for an exclusive after hours self-guided tour through the medieval stone passages, secret staircases and richly panelled rooms of Chetham’s Library.

After the Library has closed to the public and the dust of the day has settled, we will be opening rooms and passageways that are normally closed to the public, for a unique and magical experience.

Please note that due to the nature of the building, lighting will be low in some areas.

Suitable for adults and young people over 14.

Come learn about the history of Hallowe’en traditions, enjoy magical art and craft activities, and explore the bewitching medieval building and Library with a cat themed scavenger hunt!

Join Ian Coulson and Dr Peter Lindfield in the celebration of their book release, ‘The Henry VII and Elizabeth of York Marriage Bed: A Masterpiece of Tudor Craftsmanship’.

Chetham’s Library will be hosting a wine reception, followed by talks by Ian Coulson on his rediscovery of the bed and its conservation, and Dr Peter Lindfield FSA (editor of and contributor to the book) on the bed’s iconography and historical significance.

Our new ‘Inside the library’ sessions, give visitors the opportunity for an inside look at working at Chetham’s Library.

This session will be led by Library Assistant Laura Bryer, sharing her working knowledge on book conservation and specialist cleaning techniques for our antique collection.

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to learn practical techniques on how to care for antique books, and ask Laura for any tips and tricks!
