Working Class Movement Library

This session will offer participants the opportunity to reflect on their own formative experiences with anarchist print media and to delve into the library’s extensive anarchist archive.

Fight For A New Normal? Anarchism and mutual aid in the Covid-19 pandemic crisis – book launch!
Jim Donaghey

What do you remember about the Covid-19 pandemic crisis? And what have you forgotten? Do you remember, in the midst of it all, our adamant refusal to ever ‘return to normal’? Maybe the ‘old normal’ hasn’t returned, but the ‘new normal’ foisted upon us by the state and capital is a far cry from any anarchists’ aspirations. Do you remember, in the face of catastrophe, the sudden failure of the flimsy neoliberal state? Have you forgotten the thousands of mutual aid groups that formed in response? Do you remember how that energy was repressed and co-opted? This book aims to jolt us out of collective amnesia, reject the state-serving narrative, and blow away the clouds of jaded cynicism. These twelve chapters chart anarchist responses to the crisis and the evolving imposition of the ‘new normal’, reminding us of the critical lessons learned through the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Editor Jim Donaghey will discuss the project alongside some of the chapter contributors.

1pm-2pm
DIY or Die! Do-it-yourself, do-it-together & punk anarchism – book launch!
Will Boisseau

DIY or Die! brings together a diverse collection of punks, scholars and activists to explore Do-It-Yourself and Do-It-Together production of punk culture and punk spaces. A DIY/DIT ethic has animated a wide range of punk-associated anarchist activisms, and this extensive influence is on display in the 21 chapters in this book. The relationship between anarchism and punk is explored through numerous intersecting themes, starting from the tangible anarchisms found in punk spaces, squats and social centres, and extending to a range of DIY/DIT cultural production including: films, records, and fanzines; performance art; sports clubs; and other anarchistic sites of resistance. Across the chapters, the DIY OR DIE! attitude of anarchist punks across the globe is critically examined and celebrated. Join some of the editors and contributors to find about more about the book and the wider Anarchism and Punk Book Project. 2pm-3pm
Right to Roam in Action
Right to Roam Peaks and Beyond

Last year we talked about the why, this year we want to look at how. With a new government and absolutely no sign that they will introduce a right to roam, it’s time to take action. Trespass is not a criminal offence, so let’s claim our right to roam now!
We’ll start with 20 mins of q&a/discussion about the campaign, followed by some exercises to build confidence getting out. This will include a map reading/trespass planning exercise (welcome to total beginners and map fanatics) and some landowner role play if people fancy it!

3pm-4pm
Just Added: Anthropocentrism, green anarchism, Revolution!
Earth First!

Anthropocentrism – human superiority – lies at the root of globalecological crises and the prevailing ideology, even of so-called “environmentalist” movements.
It results in the reduction of ecosystems to mere ‘resources’ providing ‘services’ to humans – rather than recognising that we are all embedded in a web of life, that nature has ‘inherent value’ and is worth defending for its own sake. In this workshop we’ll discuss alternative approaches to understanding human-nature relationships – biocentrism and eco-centrism – and how they can be part of our anticolonial green anarchism. We explore the implications for our politics and our organising towards ecological revolution!

Learning Zone Education Space (off the main hall).

10.30am-11.30am
Just Added: Resisting arms manufacturing in the North West: targets, tactics and top tips
Seeds for Change

We have a lot of arms manufacturers and a large supply chain here in the North West. Come along to find out a bit more about them and think strategically and creatively about what safe, effective, enjoyable action might look like.

11.30am-12.30pm
Power and Faith in Anarchist Organising
Bad Apples Zine

Reflecting on their experiences with the Catholic Worker movement, the talk will explore the power dynamics of organising between solidarity and charity. Discuss faith as a relational practice that can enable people to bridge differences and engage with messy paradoxical situations.

12.30pm-1.30pm
The Little Red Songbook
Manchester Rad Trad

Learn the songs of the IWW, or “The Wobblies”, with Manchester radical tradition! No experience required, bring acoustic instruments if you have any, open to anyone and everyone.
Manchester Radical tradition helps trade unions and social movements learn and share the songs of their movement through workshops, sessions, and visits to picket lines.

1.30pm-2.30pm
Just Added: The True Cost of Coal
Beehive Collective

The Beehive Collective’s ‘True Cost of Coal’ makes the connections between the race for extreme energy, climate change, community action, social justice and an ever expanding economy.
This graphics campaign reflects the complexity of the struggles for land, livelihood, and self-determination playing out in Appalachia, reflecting struggles against resource extraction worldwide. A visual storytelling of the experiences of people living on the frontlines of resource extraction, It was made with the intention of honouring the tremendous history of organised resistance and the courage of these communities.
As the last coal power station shuts down, find out how Drax is operating business as usual, destroying climate and communities.

2.30pm-3.30pm
What is to be done…. NOW! Developing a revolutionary strategy for the years ahead.
Material Struggle

If you take any point from the previous five or so decades and compare it to today then in terms of being closer to an anarchist and ecological world we’re in a worse situation now than we were then. So those of us that consider ourselves in favour of such a world need to admit that no matter our exact politics and activity we’ve pretty much failed and are continuing to fail.
But what might this mean in terms of what we do now? Are we revolutionaries or activists? What even is strategy? What different strategies are there and do they work? Do we even need one, isn’t it just about direct action & anarchy? If we do where and how do we organise strategically?
This will be a short talk and then an open discussion.

Developing a revolutionary strategy for the years ahead We document this text written by a comrade of ours. Enjoy! Here's the latest updates on talks and workshops.

For more information see:
https://bookfair.org.uk/talks/

This year we will be hosting talks and performances over two areas, the Education Space (off the main hall) and the Coal Store Conference Room (upstairs, accessible by lift).

Coal Store Conference Room: Book Talks

12:00noon-1:00pm:
Ruth Kinna Anarchic Agreements: A Field Guide to Collective Organizing
Anarchic Agreements is a quintessential field guide for the revolution, answering the practical questions often left out of works of political theory and philosophy. Written by dedicated anarchist scholars and organizers, and based on the widely popular Anarchic Agreements pamphlet series, join Ruth for reading and discussion on grassroots activism and methods to improve and streamline decision making.
Ruth Kinna is a professor of Political Theory at Loughborough University, working in the Department of Politics, History and International Relations, where she specializes in political philosophy. She is the author of William Morris: The Art of Socialism and co-editor of the journal Anarchist Studies.

2:00pm-3:00pm:
Mike Finn History and the Anarchist Imagination
In this session Mike will discuss history as a battleground in terms of our understanding of how we think about pasts and futures, and what the potential and challenges are for activism.
Mike is an anarchist historian and activist based in Liverpool, UK. He is the author of Debating Anarchism (2021)

3:00pm-4:00pm
DaN McKee Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher: a memoir of struggle, grief, philosophy and hope
Exploring the various ways in which anarchist philosophy, atheism, and a background in DIY punk rock influenced one conflicted teacher’s approach to the classroom over twelve turbulent and thought-provoking years, ‘Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher’ is more than just a memoir of some teacher you’ve never met. It is philosophy of education, of anarchism, of authenticity, and of life. Throw in some personal history, the deaths of both of his parents to deal with on top of juggling all the professional absurdities that come with the job (not to mention having to teach through a global pandemic), and you have all the earmarks of a biographical classic.
DaN McKee is an anarchist, atheist, punk rock teacher of philosophy and religion who lives in the West Midlands with his wife, his cat, and way too many books. He is the author of Authentic Democracy: An Ethical Justification of Anarchism and has published academic philosophy papers on anarchism, education, punishment, and punk.

Education Space: Workshops

10:30am-12:00noon
Tipping Point Tech and Organising Drop in Space
A drop in space to talk about the organising work you are doing, sharing the battles and concerns with trying to organise anything in a overwhelmingly digital world. There will be a focus on creating solutions together, and well as re-framing the way we think about our relationships with tech. This is for anyone, with an aim to leave no one behind. We will be introducing to some organising tools that make up Tipping Point UK’s Tech Hub ( http://tpnt.uk/tech ) that might make some of the work you are doing easier.

1:00pm-2:00pm:
Right to Roam GM Anarchy and Land Justice
In this workshop Right to Roam Greater Manchester will use storytelling and discussion to bring you a short introduction into how land access struggles in Manchester, historical and present, cross paths with the struggle for anarchism. You’ll also find out what’s happening locally and how we can take action collectively in the North West.

2:00pm-3:00pm:
Earth First! Radical Ecological Anarchism
How can we agitate, radicalise, activate and weaponise the increasing anger of those woken from slumber by the acrid smoke of a burning planet? How do we move from shallow climate populism to radical ecological anarchism? How do we build mass movements without sacrificing our ideals? How do we set our sights higher while keeping view of the beautiful idea ever on the horizon? How do we shift the strategic terrain from civil disobedience to ecological resistance, from accountable to anonymous, from public disruption to property destruction? How do we foment green anarchy in the UK?

3:00pm-4:00pm:
Vishwam Heckert Revitalising Anarchist Movements
What ways of moving revitalise us? How can our daily practices revitalise social movements? Together we will experience and explore healing on all levels from the individual to the global, love & anarchy, and the secret revolutionary potential of yoga. Every body welcome.
(Please note: Some gentle physical movements may be offered for those who would like them).
Vishwam Gurudas Heckert is a heart-centred yoga teacher and trainer as well as the author of numerous essays on anarchism. You can find out more at https://flowingwithlife.org
