PAPER is an artist-led, commercial gallery based in Manchester and represents a range of emerging and mid-career artists whose practice is based around the medium of paper. The work ranges from drawing, painting, printmaking, artist's books, video, and performance. The gallery opened in August 2012 and has a regular programme of exhibitions, presenting the work of gallery artists as well as provid
ing a platform for outside curatorial projects. In 2013 PAPER instigated an Artist-in-Residence programme, Exploring PAPER, and in 2015 a mentoring scheme for artists based in the North-West of England, funded by Arts Council England. PAPER is Co-directed by artists Andrea Cotton, David Hancock, Simon Woolham, and Rachel Wrigley.

‘Paper After All’, until 17 December, is the final exhibition in PAPER’s current space. We currently have no plans to seek an alternative space, but will continue with off-site projects. We hope you can catch our final exhibition that marks a decade of PAPER. ‘Paper After All’, devised in collaboration with Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy and Saul Hay in Manchester asks each exhibiting artist to respond to the theme of assemblage.

Paper After All is a collaborative touring exhibition devised by in Conwy, and PAPER and Gallery in Manchester. The exhibition brings together a group of artists associated with each organisation for a dialogue around paper. Each artist has been asked to respond to the idea of assemblage: art that is made by assembling disparate elements – often everyday objects – scavenged by the artist or bought specially in order to create a new body of work for the exhibition.

and both work with/against found paper images, intuitively reworking, adding, deleting and highlighting what was there before. Previously benign, saccharine, kitsch, or outmoded images are given new life, given agency, are subverted and re charged. What Was Lost brings together the two artists, both fans of each other’s work, to highlight their shared interests through work on paper.
