100 years on, the work of 6 emerging artists questions the value that this collection continues to hold.

How beautiful is this sculpture? 😍
Its liveliness suggests it was carved from life. The sculptor, Alessandro Algardi has captured the process of ageing, the soft wrinkling of the eyes and mouth, blood coursing through delicate veins, the thin cartilage of the ears. And if you look closely at the eyes, you’ll find a surprise!
👀 👉 Why do you think the sculptor might have done this?
🖼 Alessandro Algardi, Monsignor Antonio Cerri, 1630-1640 Circa
👉 Purchased with funds from a national appeal and grants from the Victoria and Albert Museum Special Fund, National Heritage Memorial Fund, National Art Collections Fund, Patrons and Associates, and friends of Manchester City Art Galleries

What story do you think the intricate carving on this tusk tells?
👉 This tusk shows tea processing in China. After picking, tea leaves were spread out in bamboo baskets which were left out in the sun for at least six hours, turning them dark, due to oxidisation. Next, they were dry fried in enormous pans, then they were rolled and crushed between rollers.
The carving would have taken hundreds of hours and was commisioned, possibly by a wealthy tea merchant.
The tusk is made from Sri Lankan ivory, it was carved 1875-1900. Today, trade in ivory dating after 1947 is illegal. A total ban on the trade in ivory of any any age is likely to be enacted this year.

‘Please touch this work!’
How often do you hear that in an art gallery?

We have been very fortunate to have one of the UK’s most distinctive and dynamic #ceramicists and #sculptors Halima Cassell in residence at the gallery this week. Halima has been #carving #clay live in the atrium and today is the last day to meet her as she creates a new work.
Cassell is gifted with an exceptional ability to visualise complex patterns and mentally project them on to 3-D objects. Her work is diverse in inspiration and form, but her personal style is instantly recognisable due to her bold, energetic designs, crisp carving and intuitive understanding of how to integrate #pattern, #form, #material and scale.

We are absolutely delighted to be selected as the winner of the Valeria Napoleone XX Contemporary Art Society award and welcome two new acquisitions by artist Berni Searle.
The Valeria Napoleone XX Contemporary Art Society (VN XX CAS) is a joint initiative of philanthropist Valeria Napoleone and the Contemporary Art Society. The scheme purchases and donates a significant work by a living female artist each year to a UK museum that that has made a strong case for addressing the representation of female artists within their existing collections.
Manchester Art Gallery’s collection has relatively few works by women artists but many depicting women, especially nude women, created by male artists for male patrons. In using her body in her work, Searle takes back control of female representation. Although her work comes out of the context of South African history and politics, it raises universal questions which transcend place and speak to works in the collection, the gallery’s history and the people of Manchester.

On the 200th anniversary of Peterloo, Blue Badge guide and historian Jonathan Schofield talks about the Peterloo Jug, created to mark the massacre, probably in 1819.
The jug isn't on display currently, though George Cruikshank's prints of Peterloo are on display in our exhibition Get Together and Get Things Done.
If you’d like to get together and get things done, we have spaces and resources free for non profit groups. We are especially interested in supporting people who are looking to make Manchester a better place to live work and play. There are two spaces available – Studio 1 (ground floor) and the Exhibition Gallery 17 (second floor). Both spaces can accommodate up to 30 people for talks and meetings.
