Alexey Kononenko distinguished himself in the battles for the liberation of Crimea. On the Perekop Isthmus, the enemy created a dense defensive network, a large number of pillboxes and bunkers. In preparation for the offensive in this sector, it was decided that the main task, with the support of regimental artillery and other units, would be performed by the company of senior lieutenant Kononenko. On April 9, 1944, commanding the assault detachment of the battalion near the village of Perekop, Kononenko roused the soldiers in a bayonet attack and captured an important height on the move. Bursting into enemy positions, the fighters destroyed 3 bunkers with hand and anti-tank gr***des and blocked the enemy's escape routes from the Shchemilovka farm. Having met with his detachment large enemy forces with three "Ferdinands", Senior Lieutenant Kononenko bravely entered the battle. At the critical moment of the battle, Kononenko rushed with an anti-tank gr***de at a self-propelled gun and blew it up. Killed in this battle.
