Please note last entry is 3.30pm. Maidstone Museum is a fantastic place to spend the day with the family, with your class, with a partner or even for some alone time. We have many exhibits including Egyptian, Anglo-Saxon, Japanese, Pacific Islands, the history of Maidstone, dinosaurs, Art exhibits and much more to see! Maidstone Visitor Information is now in the reception area of the museum, so if you have any questions , or would like information on places to visit or stay, come and see us. All ages welcome, we have many activity days for children and adults alike to enjoy. Our opening hours will change throughout the year, especially around school holidays, so please check our website museum.maidstone.gov.uk for live opening times. Want to bring a school group along? The Baxter print from 1852 is known as Flora the Gypsy Girl, or Flora, who is often visited by people interested in her story.

Frederick Sanders visited this in 1935, and again in 1940. He spent two hours in the gallery, and it seemed to him that a "force" was emanating from Flora.

For - The front entrance to West Kent Hospital, Marsham Street, Maidstone, c. 1920 (Marley Collection, MC063).

Originally built in 1832, the hospital was extensively altered thirty years later.

In 1927, it opened one of the first maternity units in the district, which led to a dramatic decline in infant mortality.

Some types of artwork are easily damaged by light. Like this watercolour of a Tradesman, from Hangchow, China by local artist William Alexander. Except for special exhibitions they are kept in store to preserve them. Look out for tours where you can see art in the store and learn more about .

Join Collections Manager Sam Harris for a guided behind the scenes tour of the Museum’s stores 🖼️

Focusing on the fascinating art collections, including oil paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings, and costumes which aren’t usually on display, you will hear stories about local and national artists, with insight into their works, such as Albert Goodwin, William Alexander and Margaret Hazlitt, as well as international artists represented in the Japanese Woodblock Print Collections, such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro.

Happy : The High Street and Gabriel’s Hill, Maidstone, c. 1930 (Marley Collection - MC005).

It is the eyes on the opticians, A. J. Rawlings, that immediately grab people's attention.

It is a great example of the sign writer’s craft and must have got Mr Rawlings a lot of extra customers!
