And all of a sudden it becomes abundantly clear why duckboards were invented! First used at Ploegsteert Wood, Ypres in December 1914. probably because their trenches looked remarkably similar to the incomplete /damaged sections of ours after heavy rainfall.
The word duckboard was created during the early 20th century to describe the boards or slats of wood laid down to provide safe footing for the soldiers of World War I across wet or muddy ground in trenches or camps.

Our magical Trench Light Railway...magical because yes, the tracks currently appear to lead directly to a tree...but if you run at it really fast you will end up in Diagon Alley.
OK, it's a work in progress but great for discussing movement of supplies and wounded soldiers close to the trenches.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 was a series of unofficial pauses in fighting that occurred along the Western Front. German and Allied forces climbed out of their trenches in a gathering which still captures our imagination today.
Oh, these pics look the part don't they? They were actually taken just last Friday at our recreated trench system in Kent.

Learning from the past. Teaching history in a classroom environment doesn't always help our young people to truly understand what went before. It is beyond their scope of experience. Visiting us helps to make that 'stuff' they read in books more real.
