It's not much, but building little things for displays is actually something I quite enjoy. It reduces the amount of space in the car, but can occasionally add a little extra dimensions to a display. Here is our wall panel I rushed together the week before Battles through history at Ardingly. I wanted a little more, but it's all I could muster with the resources and time. (Ducks not ours)

Battles through History at Ardingly. Our first venture to this one and it was well worth the visit. So very friendly, lots of good engaged questions, but I think most importantly we felt that we relaxed and networked. A tiny depiction of a holding position on the way to Dunkirk. We had the BEF and the French represented along with ATS and our french civilian.

Original kit at public displays... Is it worth the risk?
Where do you draw the line?
What kit would you say yes to and what kit is a definite no?

WHY DO YOU DO IT?

I've spent quite a lot of time recently asking questions about living history โ€” events, changing audiences, younger members, the future of groups and where the hobby might be heading.

But I've realised I've skipped the most obvious question.

Why do we actually do it?

We spend considerable amounts of money on things most people wouldn't recognise. We research tiny details. We drive halfway across the country. We give up weekends. We sleep in fields. We get sunburnt, soaked, frozen and occasionally spend several hours discussing the correct location of a button...

So what keeps you coming back?

Is it the history?

Educating the public?

The research?

Friendship and belonging?

Wearing or using the kit?

Vehicles?

Remembering the people we portray?

Escapism?

Performing?

Collecting?

Or something else entirely?

And here's the bit I'm particularly curious about...

If there was no public there, would you still do it?
No right answer. I'm genuinely interested in what motivates people โ€” and whether those motivations have changed the longer you've been involved.

Why do YOU do living history?

Come and find our small display! A couple of us will be attending Battles through History at Ardingly. Our small display will be.an opportunity to learn about the differences and the relationship between BEF and French troops in 1940.
