As our followers will no doubt be aware, many Royal Flying Corps Officers and later Royal Air Force Officers were drawn from the Royal Engineers.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Pughe Lloyd, GBE, KCB, MC, DFC, (born on 12th December 1894), was no different. Before the First World War, he worked as a Post Office telegraphist; after enlisting when war was declared in August 1914 he was sent to the 21st Division on the Western Front where he served as a Signaller in the Royal Engineers.
In 1917 he was wounded by shrapnel while repairing a break in the telegraph line to the front and despite injuries to himself, his friend (with whom he had enlisted) managed to get Lloyd back for treatment. His friend was patched up in a casualty clearing station in France, but Lloyd had to be evacuated back to England. He wrote to his friend from his hospital bed, informing him of his decision to join the RFC as he considered it less dangerous than being exposed in the open mending breaks in the telegraph wires and urged his friend to join him. Thus Lloyd joined the RFC in 1917, but his friend decided to stay in the army. He went on to have a long career in the Royal Air Force, serving until his retirement in 1953.
You can see many Royal Engineers/Royal Flying Corps medal groups (including Major James McCuddens Victoria Cross group) and information on Royal Engineers Signals Companies in the galleries at the museum.

Once again this year, the Brompton and Invicta Military Wives Choir will perform on Sunday 27th, at our Wartime Christmas celebrations. They will delight us with Christmas classics and usher in tonnes of holiday cheer throughout the day.
The Military Wives Choirs has an extensive network across the UK and overseas, with active choirs as far as Riyadh. Available to all women with a military connection, the network's shared mission to sing, share and support each other is prevalent in more ways than one, inside and outside the rehearsal room.

This year at Wartime Christmas we've got lots of great display groups, and stands. One of the great local (less than 3 miles away) producers attending our Wartime Christmas event is the Dockyard Jam Factory.
The award winning Dockyard Jam Factory is located in Rochester, where they hand craft fruit preserves using only the finest ingredients and time-honoured methodology. Many of their ingredients are sourced from family-owned farms dedicated to sustainable farming practices or foraged locally. Their relationships with their suppliers allow them access to the season’s freshest fruits possible, as well as ensuring quality by minimising the time and steps from farm to jar.

On the 29th of August 1944 Hitler made a declaration to begin Vergeltungswaffe 2 (V-2) attacks on the Allies as soon as possible. The V-2 (German: Vergeltungswaffe 2, lit. 'Retaliation Weapon 2'), was the world’s first long-range guided ballistic missile. The missile, powered by a liquid-propellant rocket engine, was developed during the Second World War as a "vengeance weapon" and assigned to attack Allied cities as retaliation for the Allied bombings. The V-2 rocket also became the first artificial object to travel into space by crossing the Kármán line (edge of space) on 20 June 1944. The first serviceman killed by a V2 rocket in the UK was 1919943 Sapper Bernard Browning, 711 Artisan Works Company, Royal Engineers, who died along with two others when the rocket hit Staveley Road, Chiswick on the 8th September 1944. We have a V-2 rocket on display in the central courtyard of the museum and it is only once you are up close that you realise the sheer scale of it. Our collections hold the stories of generations of Sappers over the last 300 years. Amongst the racks in our archive are dozens of documents relating to Remembrance Day. These papers, though often unassuming, remind us of how people have gathered and continue to gather together to remember those who have served and sacrificed. Today we will be joining with others across the world to stop and remember. If you are visiting us today please be aware that we will be observing a two minute silence at 11 o'clock. We will Remember them.

It’s time for another #MuseumShort, a series of videos where we’ll be showing you parts of our collection in all their 360 degree glory! This video shows two Ashanti gold-plated brass models used for weighing gold dust, currently on display in our Victorian galleries. The first of these weights is in the shape of a leopard with an antelope in its mouth and the second shows two old men greeting each other. Gold dust was the currency of the Ashanti and its presence, alongside other natural resources and a desire for territory, were the primary motivations for British expansion in the area.
It’s not Thursday but we’re throwing it back for today’s #MuseumWeek theme, #ChildrensEyesMW! Each year we run a number of events to help engage our younger visitors with the history of the Corps of Royal Engineers and we've missed having them around! This is also your sign to come and explore our Tiny Treasures trail 😉 📖 #sorrynotsorry #shamelessplug #SapperFamily #KidsinMuseums
Will you help us find the miniature books hidden around the Museum? Our new 'Tiny Treasures' trail starts tomorrow and runs until June 27th! PLUS we're open on bank holiday Monday 🥳 😁
Can you help? The Yorkshire Trench needs you! The Yorkshire Trench is one of the few First World War trenches that still exists in its original position. Originally part of a communication network that connected other front line trenches, it earned its name after those who manned it; the 49th West Riding Division. Until recently the trench was accessible to the public but has been seriously damaged by bad weather. The City are looking to repair this historic site and continue to remember the sacrifice of all those who fought. If you would like more information or to make a donation please visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/yorkshiretrench All images are courtesy of In Flanders Fields Museum & the City of Ieper.
1 day to go! 😄 🥳 We’ve had a busy couple of weeks preparing, including a thorough dusting of all our vehicles as demonstrated here by our Assistant Curator. We can't wait to welcome you back! Tickets can be pre-booked via re-museum.digitickets.co.uk/tickets We are also on the last stage of our exciting archive redevelopment project which will allow us to better care for our collection & increase access for researchers! This means that there may be some noise disturbance during your visit. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you and thank you for your patience and understanding while we finish our makeover (due to finish mid-June)!
Today we’re launching something new, #MuseumShorts! 🤩😁 We’ve been working on this for a little while and we’re excited to introduce you to this series of short videos where we’ll be showing you parts of our collection in all their 360 degree glory! First up is our Ramsden theodolite, currently on display in our Gibraltar gallery. Traditional theodolites such as this one consisted of mounted telescopes designed to be able to rotate horizontally & vertically. Thought to be invented during the 16th century, theodolites were one of the most basic surveying instruments and were created to measure horizontal & vertical angles. Often used during cartography, or map making, theodolites could also help work out the height and distance of particular geographical features such as mountains. This theodolite is just 3.5 inches in diameter and was made by Jesse Ramsden, a British mathematician and pioneer of scientific instruments. Born in Halifax in 1735, Ramsden had many talents but became especially famous after his creation of the ‘Dividing Engine’ which could take smaller readings effectively allowing for much more accurate results!
