This weekend marks the 104th occasion a minutes silence has been held in remembrance of those who have died in conflict around the world.
The first of these remembrance services for Britain was held on the 11th November 1919, a newspaper at the time wrote:
"The first stroke of eleven produced a magical effect.
The tram cars glided into stillness, motors ceased to cough and fume, and stopped dead, and the mighty-limbed dray horses hunched back upon their loads and stopped also, seeming to do it of their own volition.
Someone took off his hat, and with a nervous hesitancy the rest of the men bowed their heads also. Here and there an old soldier could be detected slipping unconsciously into the posture of 'attention'. An elderly woman, not far away, wiped her eyes, and the man beside her looked white and stern. Everyone stood very still ... The hush deepened. It had spread over the whole city and become so pronounced as to impress one with a sense of audibility. It was a silence which was almost pain ... And the spirit of memory brooded over it all."
During the First and Second World War, over 30,000 Royal Engineers gave their lives and it is today that we remember them and every other service man and womans sacrifice, in every conflict.
Tomorrow between 10am and 4pm the Royal Engineers Museum will play host to the Medway History Showcase. Join local museums, universities, archives and history groups in an action-packed day of local history.

Have the chance to take part in "Operation Neptune" with Major General (Retired) John Drewienkiewicz CB CMG at REPLAY on the 28th of October.
“Operation Neptune is about to begin, except it is not 1944 but 2023. Take control of either the Germans and defend the Atlantic wall or side with the Allies and press on with the greatest amphibious invasion ever seen. The wargame is loosely based on a popular board game called Memoir ’44, but with extra detail to make it reflect the precise moment in history.”
The game will last start between 10-11am (players to be at the museum for 10am in preparation), and it will run until the game is over, or the close of the museum (whichever is first). Tickets cost £20, include entry to the museum for a year (so no need to worry if you miss looking around) and the game. Places are strictly limited to 12 people.
