Operation Freshman was the codename given to a British airborne operation conducted in November 1942 during World War II. It was the first British airborne operation conducted using Airspeed Horsa gliders, and its target was the Vemork Norsk Hydro hydrogen electrolysis plant in Telemark, Norway which produced heavy water as a byproduct.

One of the key aims of Dr Tocher's project has been to trace the families of the 48 soldiers and airmen who took off for Norway on that fateful evening of the 19th of November 1942. The idea is to tell the story of these incredibly courageous young men through their lives, and the lives of their families, rather than more conventional histories which focus primarily on the events themselves. Since the start of 2020, the project has managed to establish contact with the relatives of 39 of the 48 soldiers and aircrew who took part in Operation Freshman.

Brigadier Patrick Martin Blagden CBE was a British Army officer and was the United Nations' foremost expert on de-mining at UNMAS. Paddy Blagden spent nearly 35 years in the British Army, of which the last 9 years were spent in Research and Development, operational needs for special equipment and the purchasing of equipment.

Born in March 1935, he was the son of another British Army Brigadier, William Blagden. He was educated at Charterhouse School, then the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before being commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1955.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 1957, captain in 1961, major in 1967, lieutenant-colonel in 1975, colonel in 1980 and brigadier in 1984. He retired in 1988. In May 1988 he joined the engineering staff of Royal Ordnance plc, part of British Aerospace.

In September 1991, he was sent to direct the Royal Ordnance mine clearance and EOD contract in the Gulf, which he managed until the end of the mine clearance phase. In July 1992 he was appointed Project Manager of a Royal Ordnance weapons system, but in August 1992 he was recruited by the UN to set up their mine clearance office, which later became UNMAS.

He ran the UN de-mining office until August 1995, when he left to become a freelance consultant for the World Bank, the ICRC, the EU (including assistance to the JRC and the writing of contracts for clearance of a minefield in Zimbabwe), and a number of other agencies including the Japanese and Swiss Governments.

In 1994, he wrote "Anti-Personnel Landmines: Friend or Foe? A Study of the Military Use and Effectiveness of Anti-Personnel Mines". The report commissioned by the ICRC looked at the use and effectiveness of the weapons over a 55-year span.

For more information on the history of the Royal Engineers, mine detection, explosive ordnance disposal & much more, visit the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham, Kent. See www.re-museum.co.uk for more details.

The Royal Engineers Museum is hiring! Closing date is tomorrow!

We are looking to recruit a Curatorial Project Assistant to join the Museum Team on the “War Winning Engineering” project, made possible by money raised by The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Focusing on our 6000 original blueprint plans of Mulberry Harbour, built for the Normandy invasion in 1944, the post holder will join the Museum’s curators in the research, cataloguing, conservation, digitisation and display of this archive. They will supervise volunteer teams working on the project and support the creation of an exhibition on engineering in World War Two.

This post would suit someone new to working in Museums and Archives who is keen to develop their skills and knowledge of curatorial, collections care, digitisation and exhibition project work. Training opportunities and support will be provided, and the post will work closely with senior Museum staff.

Salary: £25,000 per annum
Annual Leave: 26 days
Closing date: Midnight Friday 13th December.
Interviews to be held the week of the 6th January 2025.

As our followers will no doubt be aware, many Royal Flying Corps Officers and later Royal Air Force Officers were drawn from the Royal Engineers.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Pughe Lloyd, GBE, KCB, MC, DFC, (born on 12th December 1894), was no different. Before the First World War, he worked as a Post Office telegraphist; after enlisting when war was declared in August 1914 he was sent to the 21st Division on the Western Front where he served as a Signaller in the Royal Engineers.

In 1917 he was wounded by shrapnel while repairing a break in the telegraph line to the front and despite injuries to himself, his friend (with whom he had enlisted) managed to get Lloyd back for treatment. His friend was patched up in a casualty clearing station in France, but Lloyd had to be evacuated back to England. He wrote to his friend from his hospital bed, informing him of his decision to join the RFC as he considered it less dangerous than being exposed in the open mending breaks in the telegraph wires and urged his friend to join him. Thus Lloyd joined the RFC in 1917, but his friend decided to stay in the army. He went on to have a long career in the Royal Air Force, serving until his retirement in 1953.

You can see many Royal Engineers/Royal Flying Corps medal groups (including Major James McCuddens Victoria Cross group) and information on Royal Engineers Signals Companies in the galleries at the museum.

This contemporary art exhibition exploring the forgotten pillboxes scattered across Britain’s coastlines. The touring exhibition rediscovers these Second World War defence structures, hastily built in 1940 under the threat of German invasion, many of which now lie forgotten and crumbling into the landscape.

The Royal Engineers have a long history of fortifications, from their earliest days in the Board of Ordnance, to more recent works in Afghanistan. The exhibition displays just a few of the plans and photographs of the Royal Engineers, which are usually housed in the Museum archives.
