Chastity

"My obsession with mixing images of the Virgin with images of the female n**e started in Cyprus in 2018. I was drawn to the shelves in tourist shops, where little mass-produced idols of the Madonna were being sold right next to ones of Aphrodite. I was interested in what this said about what we expect of women. We want them to be beautiful, but we also want them to be mothers and virgins, and we don't want anyone else to touch them. If they do, then they aren't worth anything. I guess that's the difference between po*******hy and the n**e in art."

Throne

Acrylic and Gold Effect Copper Leaf on Canvas by Lauren-Marie Haywood.

"This piece was inspired by a set of lyrics from an Alicia Keys song entitled, ‘She Don’t Really Care’ which, in essence, seeks to capture the regality of the everyday black women. The lyrics read “all along, I’ve ignored what I’ve always known; that the chair I’ve been sitting on is a throne. Perfection kneels at the seat of my soul.’ In this painting, I sought to convey that sense of royalty, shrouding an image of a black woman in layers of gold acrylic and gold leaf to create the high shine and textured depth you see in this image."

Introverts Kite Flying Club

"The Introverts Kite Flying Club represents a search for balance between needing to connect with others, specifically through shared interests, and needing enough alone time throughout the day to recharge and avoid burnout.

There's a fine line between alone time and isolating myself to the point where my mental health suffers, so figuring out where that line is has been an important, and lifelong journey.

Gaining self-awareness about my own neurotype and how it affects me, as well as being honest with myself about what my special interests are, has helped me unmask and build deeper connections with friends, family, and even strangers. This understanding means I can spend more time alone yet feel less lonely, which is why making this illustration filled me with so much joy and peace."

Water in all states | I'm a patient wave

"Before lockdown began, my head was swimming with ideas for shoots to do, playing with the ideas of masculinity and femininity, in particular, blurring the lines between the two. Obviously, right now, I have no idea what a post-lockdown world is going to look like, so it could be a while before I am able to bring those shoots to life but I started to think about what I could do to fulfil some of those ideas now. I don’t like the idea of masculinity and femininity being two opposite ends of a spectrum – masculinity being hard and strong and femininity being soft and delicate. I hate the divide between the two. I think they are both at their strongest mixed with the other, when there is no divide between the two at all."
