Breon O'Casey's daughter enlightens us on the distinction between her father's prints and paintings:

"While his paintings allowed him to play freely with a spectrum of colours at the tip of his paintbrush, the prints presented a different challenge. Limited to a maximum of three colours, the disciplined approach in printmaking, I believe, contributed to the creation of some truly remarkable prints." Duibhne Gough

🌟 Exciting Announcement 🌟 We are thrilled to introduce Ugandan artist Peter Oloya, our new sculptor in residence.

Peter Oloya's journey from war-torn beginnings to artistic triumph is nothing short of extraordinary. Abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army and forced into becoming a ‘boy soldier’, Oloya defied all odds to emerge a survivor and master of creativity.

Oloya’s latest body of work intricately weaves modern African culture into themes of modernity, culture, beauty and climate. 🚀 His new exhibition will launch in January 2024.

Breon O’Casey recalls growing up with a reproduction Matisse print on the wall of his home in Torquay. However, where Matisse revelled in expressing whimsical movement, O’Casey’s equally joyful expressions are somehow more grounded - both in their composition and their limited yet striking palette.

Breon O’Casey made his prints in unusually low editions of no more than twenty-five. This was partly due to economics, but also a desire to make the prints special. As a result, they are now extremely desirable and offer an excellent acquisition for the first-time buyer or seasoned print collector alike.

Our current exhibition displays a number of extremely rare etchings and linocuts which have never before been exhibited in London. Don't miss the show!

Have you ever wondered about Breon O'Casey's printmaking process? 🤔

It would begin with Breon building up a composition, often using painted cut-outs of cards arranged on the page, which could then be translated into the Lino and inked up as individual elements.

With a talent for composition that revelled in a powerful ‘simplicity of image’, O’Casey would have been well aware of Henri Matisse’s ‘cut-outs’, which he made towards the end of his life when he became bed-bound after an operation in 1941.

💍 Did you know that some of the brilliant sculptors we represent are also masters of jewellery-making? Among them is Breon O'Casey, who ventured into this art form.

It all began when he was introduced to the jewellery of Alexander Calder, which inspired him to make his own. Initially, it was a means to supplement his income, but as demand soared, Breon found himself dedicating more and more time to this craft. O'Casey's gold and silver pieces have earned him worldwide recognition 🏆🌍

🌀 Celebrating with Peter Randall Page's enormous granite sculpture 'Seed', which was commissioned for the Eden Project in 2007.

In 2003, Peter Randall-Page was commissioned to collaborate with Jolyon Brewis of Grimshaw Architects on the design of a new education building for the Eden Project in Cornwall. The result is a building whose roof structure is based on the geometric principles underlying plant growth. At the centre of the building is a specially designed chamber housing ‘Seed’, a granite sculpture based on the same spiral phyllotaxis pattern as the structure itself.

Peter plotted the Fibonacci pattern of nearly 2,000 circles onto the 3D form. The growth pattern on which the sculpture is based is organic and bears no relation to a horizontal and vertical grid, which made the task particularly difficult. It was a complex process involving a balance between geometric accuracy and organic freedom.

Breon O’Casey knew his tools and processes inside out, however when it came to printing it was his remarkable collaboration with master printmaker Hugh Stoneman, whom he met in 1997, that allowed his bold approach to colour and form to really sing.

Indeed Stoneman, who had moved from Islington to Penzance and worked with a number of well-known artists including Barbara Hepworth and Terry Frost, would often use a variety of highly skilled printing methods in one print to allow O’Casey to express exactly what he wanted to convey.

For instance 'Three Black Squares' (pictured here) is an aquatint etching with linocut. Here the etching gives the painterly texture of the red whilst the linocut process allows the three black squares to be a dense, dark black giving the print depth and definition.
