'Dilworth's works are not passive art objects, placed on a plinth or mantlepiece and admired from afar. They are held close, passed between generations, used as touchstones of contemplation, comfort and confrontation with all that we love and fear in life'.

'The wall has its own weight and presence but is a way of holding and sustaining the sun’s path each day when it is clear enough. The essence of the work lies in the dynamic thresholds of transition when the light begins to enter the wall, and when it begins to descend within it. A form of transient drawing with light expressing the physical turning of the earth.'
– Extract from Julie Brook diaries during the making of Winter Wall, Aird Mhòr, 2019

Currently on show in our Sculptors Prints & Drawings exhibition on the mezzanine level at Kings Place is this fabulously powerful large scale drawing by Nigel Hall RA which combines crisp, colourful shapes with soft charcoal backgrounds.

A disciplined sketcher Hall draws every day as part of his sculpture making practice. His notebooks act not only as a diary but as a library or lexicon to draw upon for his work. He says:

I always carry a notebook, and fill one about every two months. It’s sketchbook, diary, aide memoire – everything goes into it, and it’s very useful because I also make notes of dimensions of sculptures, drawings. So I can look back to any period, if I need to find anything.

'The stones flow also, as the fluid strata / crest the curve of time'
– Extract from 'Beck', a poem by Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson, quoted by David Farrier in an essay about Angela Palmer's previous solo exhibition, 'Deep Time' (2023).

Step into 'Different World' – the exhibition currently on display – and discover the sculptures of Angela Palmer, comprised of 2.5-billion-year-old White Anorthosite stone. Sourced by Palmer from a disused quarry on the Isle of Harris after an extensive six-year search, this rare stone is the same as that brought back from the Moon by the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. 🌟

Palmer’s series 'Written in Stone: Journey from the South Pole' delves into the deep material history of the Earth, carving out stories hidden beneath the surface of pre-human time.

Back at this weekend for a press tour and still enthralled by Lynn Chadwick’s stunning ‘Ace of Diamonds’ which looks so at home on the main lawn moving gracefully in the brisk Norfolk breeze.

‘Ace of Diamonds’ was the last work Lynn Chadwick made and at over 6m wide is also his largest. It originated as a 1m proposal for a memorial commission for the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy which Chadwick served under during the Second World War.

Unfortunately it was too contemporary for the commission but Chadwick persevered and spent the next ten years bringing it to fruition.

My video was slightly wobbly so here is the wonderful version!
