Open Now: Luca Longhi with ‘Ruins Romance.’

Longhi’s practice originates in a recognition that the walls and surfaces that surround us in cities are not just passive, idle structures: they are the receivers and recorders of history. Each mark that scars the surface of a wall, whether intentional or wholly accidental, is the potential record of a life lived. In this sense, the wearing of time is not dilapidation, it is the accumulation of history. For Longhi, everyday sights like the exhausted facade of an abandoned building, the chipped, pen-scrawled tiles in a public toilet or the multicoloured, peeling layers of paper on an advertising billboard are not just symbols of human neglect, they are scattered, historical fragments that join to form a rich patina: an anthropological archive from which various stories of human joys, disappointments, desires and sufferings can be gleaned. In this way, the works on show in Ruins Romance take on a distinctly politicised aspect. They demonstrate a sensitive, human-centric vision of urban space. One that stresses the crucial importance of living amongst architecture that responds to us, that is affected by us as much as we are affected by it, and that welcomes rather than alienates.

Luca Longhi. ‘Ruins Romance.’ Opening 3rd September.

In ‘Ruins Romance’ Longhi aims to capture and reproduce the specific mood and atmosphere of the overlooked corners of urban space. Here, the vandalisations, the accidental scuffs and scrapes and the areas of decay that adorn the many surfaces of the city centre are faithfully emulated through paint and mark-making. To do this, Longhi’s practice is one of relinquishing control, of letting oneself be ruled by the unplanned, the automatic, the unknown. This manifests itself in an improvisational, serendipitous artistic process of adding, removing, building, covering and then adding again. For Longhi, a work is very often not finished until it has undergone an extensive, unpredictable arc, during which it has been taken to the brink of ruin and brought back through gentle restorative cleaning. It is this sense of risk, this terrifyingly close proximity to the threat of total destruction, which makes Longhi’s work feel so vital and so energetic. It is for these same reasons that that each work also feels so true an ode to the urban cityscape, defined as the city is by its physical unfixed-ness, locked in a endless cycle of demolition and reconstruction.

We are spoke to Kitty McKay ahead of our participation in this year’s SWAB Barcelona Art Fair (8-11th October). We are excited to be presenting a duo exhibition exploring world building as an act of resistance featuring the work of Kitty McKay and William Reinsch.

McKay, a Glasgow-based artist and researcher, is eternally preoccupied with the ways in which public space is made and unmade. Working across installation, moving image, sculpture, sound, collage, and writing, their approach to practice is informed by feminist, q***r, and crip frameworks for understanding, and overcoming, the ways power constructs place. Their installations seek to evoke the errant, dissonant, and unauthorised socialities and practices that happen in urban space through the dislocation of materials that comprise and enforce spatial hegemony.

Today and Saturday are the final two days to see ‘Ancient Memories’ featuring the work of Polina Osipova, Rike Droescher and Zayn Qahtani.

Together, these artists use materials to create sacred charm-like sculptures that point to the existence of lost, subterranean worlds of ancient rituals and traditions beyond the bounds of our immediate visual reality. These works reward a quieter, more meditative approach to viewing. It is as if only those who first tune themselves to each work’s individual resonance is afforded the possibility to fully reach in and grasp its submerged, hidden world.

Twilight Contemporary is thrilled to present ‘Ancient Memories,’ a group exhibition featuring the work of Polina Osipova, Rike Droescher and Zayn Qahtani. Each of the artists in ‘Ancient Memories’ work with a heightened attention to materiality. In their practices, they each harness unorthodox materials and techniques to create mysterious, encrypted objects that seem to convey a secret, hallowed truth that resists quick or easy deciphering. Like religious effigies, talismans or sacred charms, the pieces on display in ‘Ancient Memories’ point to the cultivation of a more personal, intimate relation with the spiritual world and inspire a hushed sense of reverence in the viewer.

We are incredibly excited to announce our participation in this year’s SWAB Barcelona Art Fair (8-11th October) in the MyFaF section. We will present a duo exhibition exploring world building as an act of resistance featuring the work of Kitty McKay and William Reinsch.

‘In its nineteenth edition, Swab places at the centre of its programme the construction of community and the creation of shared value around art. This purpose shapes its role as a meeting point for artistic practices that question the conditions under which they are produced and circulated. In this sense, the fair extends beyond the exhibition space, fostering relationships through an expanded programme. MyFaF is a program designed to support young galleries and emerging voices, giving them a stand free-of-charge supported by the Swab Foundation to experiment and exhibit their artists.’

‘Baptism II,’ Zayn Qahtani, Chrome gilt copper polylactide, dyed abalone shell, earth pigments, watercolour, oil pastel,

Working across drawing, painting and sculpture, Zayn Qahtani’s works appear much, much older than they actually are. When encountering one of Qahtani’s works in the gallery, one would be forgiven for thinking that it might be some sort of devotional amulet unearthed from an unknown ancient civilisation. This arcane strangeness is due, in large part, to Qahtani’s skilful use of organic, found materials like crystals, soils, seashells and pigments derived from plants. These materials, with their unique and inimitable vividness of hue, give her work a specific lustre and shining iridescence. Assembled into sublime, glittering constellations that seem to defy reality, Qahtani’s sculptures appear to us like some shimmering vision from a long forgotten, sunken dream.
