Sitting on the banks of the River Cray, Hall Place was once the country residence of Sir John Champneys, a successful merchant and former Lord Mayor of London. Today you can imagine genteel life in Tudor times as you explore the 500-year-old historic house or take a stroll in the spectacular gardens. Throughout the year, exciting exhibitions and events make Hall Place the perfect destination for all the family.

The Glasswing Butterfly, Greta oto, is so-named because of its transparent wings. It has evolved this to enable it to be camouflaged in its surroundings.
We have a number of them flying now (if you can find them!).

The team work hard to grow this amazing produce, to demonstrate what is possible in a small area, and for us to teach the children that visit us where our food comes from. But it doesn't go to waste........ A lovely quote from our Head Gardener.
"The garden team are thrilled that the produce from the kitchen garden is going to good use again this year, with regular donations to Jean from ' The community fridge'- Crayford and to Gill from 'Bexley foodbank'

Pay them a visit to find out more. So much more to know!
Plumeria, or Frangipani, is named after Charles Plumier a Catholic Monk who travelled the New World documenting many plants and animals. They originate from the southern US, through Central America to tropical South America. In Hawaii, where they were introduced in the 19th century, they are grown as an ornamental and the flowers (pictured) are used to make the famous leis.
The plant itself is a listed food plant of a large South American moth, Pseudosphinx tetrio. We have two in the butterfly house, the white one pictured, and another one which are waiting for to flower.

Great advice. Enjoy the sunshine safely please. London Borough of BexleyLondon Butterfly GardensRiverside Café at Hall Place
Phew! It's hot today ☀️
Lengthy periods of hot dry weather cause dry grass and foliage. It only takes a spark to cause a wildfire 🔥🚒
You can help reduce the risk of fire by not using BBQs (including disposables) in parks, woodlands or open spaces – take a picnic instead.

The Welling and District Model Engineering Society, known to us as the fabulous group that run the miniature railway each Sunday, welcomed students from Royal Greenwich Trust School yesterday as part of their studies. They were given a short talk on engineering and then able to ride and drive the steam engines. Jane Prince , Head of faculty for creative arts and technologies, said it was lovely to see them out of the classroom and getting some hands on experience. London Borough of Bexley

On #internationalwomensday we had to mention the fabulous Countess of Limerick. She resided at Hall Place from 1917 - 1943. Overcoming many trials during her lifetime, as well as working hard to restore and maintain Hall Place even though she was only a tenant (for which we are very grateful). Did you also know she set up the Shamrock League - selling buttonholes of the Irish National emblem to raise money for soldiers and sailors of the Boer War. Her charity work continued during the First World War when she, alongside other ladies, set up a buffet at London Bridge Station for returning service men. She was awarded a CBE in 1920 for this work. If you would like to learn more about the Countess then why not come along to one of our historic house tours https://www.hallplace.org.uk/guided-tours/ #iwm #internationalwomensday2023
