Did you know the 'bran' from wheat bran has many other uses, such as for painting oil, boiling bamboo shoots and as the best slug deterrent (discovered by BBC's Gardeners' World)!

And even All-Bran itself can be diverse - Canada has strawberry varieties, Portugal and Spain have yoghurt, and France has Fig & Apple! They haven't quite made it to the UK, but here's hoping...

There’s only one Snow White for us! Did you know that the original release was followed by an uniquely chaotic and ambitious party for the Disney employees?
The invites were sent out for ‘Walt’s Field Day’ on Saturday, June 4th 1938 at the Norconian Hotel with Pitch and Putt, Badminton and Dancing. Many animators pushed for a more boisterous weekend, eager to let loose after the long hours put into animating Snow White.

After dancing, a large group of animators and paint girls (responsible for filling in animator’s sketches) broke horses out of stables, rode them through the hotel lobby or into the pool and fell out of windows!

Spring has sprung at the Museum of Brands! Pop by and celebrate the first day of Spring in our Memorial Garden! Our garden is an amazing spot to come, soak up the sun, and enjoy the lovely warm weather. Did you know that our Memorial Garden has been here longer than the Museum itself? It was started in 1990 while the building was still the London Lighthouse Hospice! While it was open, the Lighthouse served as one of the largest centers for individuals living with HIV. Today, the Memorial Garden is maintained and taken care of by our amazing gardener, Gary, and volunteers!

For the Festival of Britain, Guinness stunned crowds with a hugely popular, 25-foot tall Festival Clock. The clock featured classic Guinness zoo animals from their advertising, as well as much-loved characters from Alice in Wonderland. An original poster, photographed here in our Time Tunnel, reads as follows:

“What a lot there is to see!” Alice exclaimed.
“That’s why they call it the South Bank Sight,” said the Hatter. “Now let’s hear you re-cite.”
So Alice folded her hands and began: -
“He thought he saw a Dome that held Discoveries galore;
He looked again and saw it was
A Guinness by Thames shore.
‘We know it’s Good for You,’ he said,
‘Need man discover more?’ “

One of the most recognisable international brands, Coca Cola, had a big milestone 131 years ago today: on the 12th of March 1894, Coca Cola was sold in glass bottles for the first time. For the first few years of its existence, Coca Cola existed only as a fountain drink, with inventor John Pemberton and owner Asa Griggs Candler unconvinced by the idea of selling by the bottle. However, Mississippi sweet shop owner Joseph A. Biedenharn saw the opportunity there and made the change in his store - although his were in ordinary reusable glass bottles, not the iconic contoured coke bottles we know today.

Coca Cola is dotted throughout our collection - here we see its 70s, 80s and 90s iterations, including the advent of Cherry Coke from the 1980s.

Today in is the patenting of the hula hoop! Arthur “Spud” Melin - the Wham-O company cofounder - patented the hip-swivelling hoop toy on the 5th March 1963. While we don't have images of the toy to share, we can show the fun circular snack that took it as its namesake!

Hula Hoops have been a family favourite crisp since the 1970s. Here you can compare an early 1970s pack with a 2023 Hula Hoops 'Puft' pack (part of our 'Top 100' case on Britain's favourite brands in 2023, where it ranked at number 47).

Today in was the seventh Academy Awards, on the 27th February 1935, when a six year old Shirley Temple made history by receiving the first ever 'juvenile' Oscar. It was awarded for her performance in 1934's Bright Eyes, and was miniature - only around half the height of a standard Oscar statue! 🧍🏆

Shirley Temple's massive popularity as a child star led to the creation of associated products, including this 1930s Shirley Temple doll and Playhouse now housed in our Time Tunnel.

The Oscars are coming up soon - but we won't see any juvenile awards this year, as they were discontinued in the 1960s.

Eugene Rimmel was a very talented perfume and cosmetics innovator, with successes in toilet vinegar, pomades and mouth rinses. Perhaps his greatest innovation was non-toxic mascara, so successful that many countries adopted "rimmel" as their word for mascara.

Did you follow the controversy around Lyle’s Golden Syrup last February? For over 150 years, the brand had held a Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest unchanged packaging. Since 1888, their iconic depiction of a lion swarmed by bees has been accompanied by the biblical quote ‘out of the strong, came forth sweetness’.

Many people were very upset about the rebrand to a lion’s head and single bee, seen on all large bottles, squeezy cartons and dessert portions! But don’t worry, the original design has stayed on all tins, so you can still enjoy a bit of history this pancake day 🥞

It's a big day in - 119 years ago today, on the 19th of February 1906, W.K. Kellogg founded Kellogg's! (Then named the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company.) Kellogg's product went on to achieve international popularity, and are scattered throughout the decades of our time tunnel - what you see here is only the tip of the iceberg!

See if you can spot some of the iconic moments in Kellogg's history in these objects - from the introduction of Tony the Tiger in the 1950s, to more modern innovations such as the 2010's white chocolate coco pops. Is your favourite cereal among the products pictured here?
