The Saatchi Gallery opened in October 2008 in the 70,000 sq. ft. Duke of York HQ building on King's Road, Chelsea with an exhibition dedicated to new art from China. Since then it has presented exhibitions of new work from the Middle East, India, America, the UK, as well as a major exhibition of international sculpture called The Shape of Things to Come. In 2009 the Saatchi Gallery's exhibitions of work from China and the Middle East were ranked the top two most visited exhibitions in London by The Art Newspaper. In The Art Newspaper's 2010 survey the Saatchi Gallery's three exhibitions that year - Newspeak: British Art Now, Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture and The Empire Strikes Back: Indian Art Today - were ranked as the second, third and fourth most visited in London, surpassed only by Van Gogh at the Royal Academy of Arts. The Saatchi Gallery aims to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unknown young artists or by international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK.

📷 The current global health crisis has inspired the 11th edition laureate, @finbarroreilly, and the @prixcarmignac team to create ‘Congo In Conversation,’ a new digital project produced in collaboration with Congolese photographers and journalists based in cities across Congo.

📆 On April 24, 2020, video journalist @guylainbalume was at the scene of a militia attack two weeks ago that left 17 people dead, including 13 Virunga Park rangers.

🦍 The incident was one of the deadliest in the history of Virunga Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site burrowed within the forest-covered volcanoes of central Africa. Virunga is the continent’s oldest national park and largest tropical rainforest reserve, covering 7,800 square kilometers, and home to over half the world’s population of mountain gorillas. The park has been repeatedly hit by violence, but still relies on tourism to help fund its conservation efforts. It was closed to visitors in March after experts warned gorillas might be vulnerable to catching Covid-19. This has had a huge impact on conservation efforts.

💬 “The morning of the attack, I was driving down the road from Rutshuru towards Goma on my way home from an assignment. I stopped to buy some fruit from roadside vendors. As I was buying oranges, a truck full of Virunga Park rangers drove past. I got back in my vehicle and a few minutes later we reached the village of Bivunga, where people on the road stopped us and told us there was an attack underway a few hundred meters ahead. I could hear gunfire so I grabbed my camera and started filming while trying to find out what was going on. I called an army officer who informed me there was an ambush, with civilians and rangers killed.”

🌲 🌳 From January to July 2019, Italian photojournalist @tomprotti, with the support of the @prixcarmignac, accompanied by British journalist @samcowie84, traveled thousands of miles across the Brazilian Amazon to create the reportage, ‘Amazônia.’ From the eastern region of Maranhão to the western region of Rondônia, through the states of Pará and Amazonas, he portrayed life in the modern-day Brazilian Amazon, where social and humanitarian crises overlap with the ongoing destruction of the rainforest.

📷 1/2: Kayapó Indigenous Territory, Pará. Kayapó children play behind a waterfall in the Kuben-Kran Ken village, in the southern Pará State. The Kayapó’s territory is the largest tropical protected area in the world, more than 3.2 million hectares of forest and scrubland containing many endangered species. It serves as a crucial barrier to deforestation advancing from the south.

📷 2/2: Grajau, Maranhão. A deforested area in the southern Maranhão State seen from the helicopter of IBAMA, Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources. Maranhão is one of the worst affected by forest fires and illegal logging, and has lost 75% of its Amazon forest cover. The Amazon rainforest is losing the equivalent of a football pitch of forest cover every minute. Scientists say it is reaching a tipping point: if deforestation continues upward, the forest may never recover.

🇨🇩 The current global health crisis has inspired the 11th edition laureate, @finbarroreilly, and the @prixcarmignac team to create ‘Congo In Conversation,’ a new digital project produced in collaboration with Congolese photographers and journalists based in cities across Congo.

🚰 Goma is a major hub for the world’s second-largest @unitednations peacekeeping operation and for hundreds of humanitarian aid organizations that spend millions of dollars monthly on local interventions, and yet the city has virtually no running water.⁣

📷 1/2: A man rests on water containers while waiting his turn to fill them at communal tap in Goma, the capital of eastern Congo's North Kivu Province this month. Goma's residents can spend hours waiting in line for access to communal pumps and often spend the early morning hours waiting for their turn.

📷 2/2: A woman carries water containers in Goma, the capital of eastern Congo's North Kivu Province last month. Congo's state water provider REGIDESO promised free access to water at the start of the coronavirus outbreak in March, but with few people connected to water mains and poor service for those who are, the lack of water during the pandemic has made it difficult to adhere to health advisories and hygiene measures and has led to protests in Goma, which sits on the shores of Lake Kivu.

'Arctic: New Frontier’ follows the 9th edition #PrixCarmignac laureates @kadirvanlohuizen and @yuri.kozyrev’s six-month journey from April to September in 2018 as they covered the 15,000 kilometres of the Arctic Circle, which is a visual testimony examining the consequences
of climate change on the entire region.

📷 1/3: Greenland, July 2018. Meltrivers close to the edge of the ice sheet close to Kangerlussuaq. In front a river of meltwater. Due to climate change the ice sheet slowly melts. It forms melting streams and reservoirs where the meltwater forms underground rivers.

📷 2/3: Every other day on average, the icebreaker Baltika supports the mooring and loading operations of tankers at Gazprom Neft’s “Arctic Gate” terminal in Gulf of Ob. The terminal was built 700 km away from the existing pipeline infrastructure, so Yamal gaz, oil and condensates are shipped by sea for the first time in the history of Russia’s energy industry.

📷 3/3: Cape Kamenny Russia May 2018. Gazprom Neft's "Arctic Gate" terminal in Gulf of Ob. The Novoportovskoye is one of the biggest oil fields in the Yamal Peninsula. The field is located 30 km from the coast of the Ob bay, and oil is transported by pipeline to Cape Kamenny where a terminal facility has been developed. The company Gazprom Neft is operating the Novy Port project, which is built to be able to deliver up to eight million tons of oil per year.

💫 “The work of art is a scream of freedom.”

We saddened this week by the news of the passing of visionary Bulgarian artist Christo (1935–2020). Along with his wife Jeanne-Claude, he changed the way we see the world. Sunday’s statement concludes: “In a 1958 letter Christo wrote, 'Beauty, science and art will always triumph.' We hold those words closely today.”

Background

Saatchi Gallery was founded in 1985 by Charles Saatchi. It has presented fifteen of the twenty most visited exhibitions in London during the last eight years, due to the policy of free admission to all gallery-curated shows.

It was the first UK museum to introduce the public to exhibitions of Cy Twombly, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Philip Guston, Sigmar Polke, Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Jenny Saville, Sarah Lucas, Glenn Brown, Andreas Gursky, John Currin, Ron Mueck, Grayson Perry, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Cecily Brown, Martin Kippenberger, Peter Doig, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Richard Prince, Charles Ray, Duane Hanson, and Alex Katz, among others.

In recent years it has presented surveys of emerging artists from China, India, the Middle East, Korea, Russia, South America, Africa, Germany, the United States, and Britain, many of whom have achieved international success. The Saatchi Gallery’s education programme attracts over two thousand schools each year, organising student visits from primary school level upwards. Its website displays over one thousand works that have been exhibited in the last three decades as a study resource, and also gives full details about the art to be seen in forthcoming exhibitions.

The Saatchi Gallery moved in October 2008 to the 70,000 sq. ft. Duke of York HQ building on King's Road, Chelsea, and transformed the buiding into a light airy spaces with high ceilings to present art at in ideal conditions. The museum also hosted a popular exhibition celebrating the Rolling Stones band, and a show dedicated to the growth of the ‘selfie’ phenomenon.

The Saatchi Gallery aims to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unknown young artists or by international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK.
